    Default Door prize

The timber to make this pen came from the Toowoomba GTG it was donated by Neil, Dai Sensei, as a door prize. The timber is red gum that has been in a bog for a very long time and that what has caused the colour change. The kit is from Brett at Addictive and the finish is WOP.

Thank you Neil what a luck door prize.

The picture do not do the timber justice is has so much depth it is nearly like Ebony.

    Default Ancient Redgum

Very nice, Sam - I'm assuming the wood is similar to the "Ancient Redgum" I was given by a friend, which came from the Murray Valley. Being bog timber, it can be aged 10-15,000 years or more.

Did you find it very "punky" and needing to be stabilized, or were you lucky enough to get a really solid piece? Mine took some work, but finally came good, and you are right, photos don't do it justice, because what appears black at a distance has beautiful red undertones up close - special stuff.

    Default Great Photos

Also meant to say, great photography, Sam, even if we agree the Ancient Redgum doesn't show its true colours. I particularly like your background - very appropriate.

When you look into the pen you can see it was red gum, I was lucky the timber did not need to be stabilized and turned a treat a bit on the nose though.

Andrew there was a bit of timber but only enough for a couple of solid pens the rest will have to be used for segment work.

One of these pens is going to be a keeper just have to see how the others pan out.

Actually, it was Big Splinter that donated the Bog Redgum , I think it was me that told you what it was

    Great looking result Sam

It is similar to Bog Oak from OS, but definately Redgum. Not sure how old, but my guess would be probably 000's considering the depth an consistency of the penetration of staining.

I also have some to make Big Splint a pepper grinder, just not as big as the last one I started for him . Can't wait until I get back from holidays to turn them, the colour looks amazing.

    Cheers from Fiji

    Wow!
Thanks Sam. The pen looks beautiful. It is great to hear it turned up well.

It is amazing what can be turned from an off-cut.

    Cheers
    Tom
