Exchange student
Miki is a Japanese exchange student we have staying with us at the moment. This afternoon I helped her make this pen which she's pretty happy with. The wood is a nice piece of birdseye Huon Pine on an Australiana Elegant Beauty.
EnjoyIt's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Corbs,
Kind of you to do two things IMHO, 1. Assist in the Student Exchange Program in the first place and 2. Make the pen with the young lady that I am sure she will treasure and her folks completely happy.
Your sharing has made my day. Hard to see the pen clearly but from here it looks great.
Kind regards Peter.Nil Desperandum

Thanks all, I'd post a better picture but she won't let it out of her sight now
My past experience with Japanese exchange students has been that they've generally been quite timid but Miki has been quite the opposite. We have four chooks and when I suggested she try to catch one I thought she would politely decline. Instead she set off with a large amount of vigour and wouldn't stop until she caught one. I was impressed, she was very proud and my boys thought it was hilarious
When it came to turning the pen, I chose Huon for the ease of turning but she was quite happy with the chisel in her hand. I could have picked something with a bit more meat but the end result was a very nice pen in birdseye Huon. It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.
