First feather
John (Gawdelpus) brought around some coloured feathers he scored at the local $2 shop the other day and I have been playing with casting them. Unfortunately, whatever they are dyed with, it reacts to thin CA . So I had a few failures and the feathers also don't want to lie flat on the tube.
So I ended up gluing the spines only down to a tube with silicon plugs at either end, 4 feathers on a EB tube. I then wrapped it all in some baking paper to roll the feathers around the blank and put it in a piece of wood drilled out with a hole a few mm's larger than the tube. I then removed the wax paper carefully leaving the tube and feathers in the hole and cast it with clear resin. After setting I gave it a thump with a dowel and the found during the cold weather it was still a bit tacky, but perfect for recasting.
The recast looked Ok so turned it tonight. I has green, orange, purple and red feathers (I used the good feather up on the rejects ). Interesting, but I like the feather blanks from the US a lot more, and considering the work required they are probably cheaper .
As usual, had fun trying

Well done Neil, nice work.. I read a tute on doing a feather pen and it sounded like a lot of fiddly work involved but they do look lovely. I didn't do one myself but have seen a few on the internet and some of them are awesome colours.
Reality is no background music.

Congrats on trying Neil!!! Can't really see any detail in the photos.
Maybe a trip to Currumbin to collect some Rainbow lorry feathers will be worth the effort.

Neil,, I am going to watch this particular idea of yours because I too want to try this. I have seen other blanks and they are well done because the person has the technique really perfected. I am hoping you will continue to share your method with us with some quality photos. thanks for showing and keep up the goood work.

Aren't first just nothing but fun?
I'm currently working on my first feather blank as well.
Your first attempt looks fine, but with practice perfection will be achieved.

Unfortunately I can't see any detail in your pics but I received a beautiful feather pen (pheasant) from New London in the swap so I will just imagine. I do however have hens that have black and white horizontal stripes on each feather (plymothrocks) and hens that have a white feather with a black spot on the end of each feather (silver spangle hamburgs) and other pretty girls .... maybe you should 'hunt' down a poultry person in the area (or give me a shout and I'll save feathers if you let me know the size needed) for feathers that look great but don't change colour when they come in contact with resin.

The detail is a little hard to see but it looks OK from what I can see. Maybe not the best choice of feathers but it will not take you long to perfect them
