I managed to get some shed time in today so thought i would have a go at making a kitless pen.

the whole pen is made from stainless steel, the clip is copied from a WIP by Dennis Cabell i found on IAP forums. the clip isnt anywhere near as good as the ones he makes...i made a bit of a mistake my rotating the lid too far when drilling the second hole and also made it a little too long. if it bugs me enough i will make a new lid and clip. the body of the pen has been sanded to 240g so it has a brushed apperance, the clip and nib are polished to a mirror finish. i pouropsley left the straight part of the nib a little oversize so the die would cut a slight "grip" onto the nib.

if i do any more of these i think i may need to invest in an extra fine tap and die as the ones i have are a little coarse.

pretty happy with my forst atempt but as always there is room for improvement

Well you certainly picked a tough material to start off with hehe,drilling tapping and threading stainless is not for the faint hearted hehe, Its all a learning process and you have made a damn fine effort on that one Cheers ~ John

I thought I did ok with my brass and copper. That is great. No way would I attempt Stailess on my little lathe.

the side wall thickness is approx 1.5mm. it started off as a 12mm dia rod then drilled a 9mm hole for the tap. it is a bit heavier than a kit pen.

i heve weighed the cigar pen i use every day and it comes in at 48g, the kitless one is heavier.....50g without the lid and 70g with the lid. i could have drilled a little further into the body of the pen and saved some weight but would have needed to put a spacer in there to push the srping and ink out the nib properly. the proportions of the pen are pretty close to a JR jent

i have some ideas for a resin and SS mix pen

Only 2 grams heavier than a Cigar, I would be happy with that.
Once you used it for a while you wouldnt notice the weight.

Very impressive work.

Your Pen is special for many reasons and you have done wonders with it uniquely matting off the finish.

i uesd the pen for a bit today, the weight in the end of the pen seems to work quite well.....kinda makes it sit back against my hand nicely. dont think i would like to make it postable tho, it might fall over
