Any idea what this timber is??
Hey There,
Did a few pens over the Break and will post more later, I got a heap of blanks off E-Pay and all were identified except these ones, any one have any ideas??
All I can say is it's bloody hard, I filled the cracks with CA before I started. All that the supplier said was that it come from the ''GoldFields'' I have a susspision it might be Jam, but I have only seen it in rough sawn slab.
The Kits are Sierras from Timberbits
Any info greatly appreciated.

Could be goldfields burl although the pieces I have seen were redder than what you have. Goldfields burl is probably just a generic name for any burl coming out of the area though so you might be able to use it still? Looks good whatever it is
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

The "mystery" timber may be "White top Burl" as I have done some that looks very similar, but I have lots of unidentified wood in my collection hehe ,cheers ~ John

Very nice pens, Hazza.
Goldfields Burl could be lots of species, but its not jam. Jam is short for rasberry jam which is the smell and appearance of this acacia when freshly cut. I might have a bit in the shed if you want it just PM me and I'll have a look.
The hardest timber I've turned was a Gimlett burl, but I don't think it's that either.
Best wishes,
Steve

I've had goldfields burl which has been this colour and even lighter so colour wise it is possibly goldfields, Very nice pens, whatever the timber.

For my 2 bobs worth the first two look like White Gum (wandoo) burl and the next one would be what they call Golfields Burl could be cut from any Eucalypt in the goldfields area, the white top is the sap wood (or outer layer) of the burl. Cutters get a permit to cut burls but not the trees and don't take note of what burls come from what trees.
RippaThee who has not made a mistake, has not made anything ??

Not Jam mate. That is if you mean the Acacia called Raspberry Jam. When turned it smells for all the world like Raspberry Jam.
Most probably, as others have said, one of the goldfields Eucs. Not a lot of help is it?
Great pens!!

The second picture is identical to two batches of blanks that I have bought off of ebay in the last year. they were being sold as vasticola burl. The picture you supplied makes me think with 95 % certainty, that it is the same product.
KevinWhat if the Hokey Pokey.....is what it's all about???

Hey Rippa,
Spot On it is Wandoo, and it apparently came from down near the root of the tree, according to my source, I found a couple more pieces in the bag of stuff that I was sent last time.
The second pen is Red Morrell Burl, and I have a fair bit of that so be prepared .
