Incorporating other materials into Turning Stock
Curious if you incorporate other materials with your turning stock? Im thinking of some sort of soft metal that you could turn along with the wood? Im wondering if you could put a thin piece of copper or brass? Any ideas?

hi Jim
I have just started doing that exact thing....using ideas gained from the forum. So far I have tried coke can and some black plastic....I think copper or brass would also work very well.
here is a pic of a couple I finished recently
Attachment 60876
from the bottom
the first 2 are segmented layer of coke can and a contrasting timber
the 3rd one is a layer of black plastic
cheers

Try this, cut thin grooves in the wood blank with a skew and melt soft contrasting mestal in it, or , Penn State and a couple others sell a resin kit, where you wrap something around the tube or paint it like Barry Gross has his painted by a well known local artist and then pours on the resi, like the snake skin blank, many are now using antler and corn stock and I have seen burned in art work, but with a lot of detail. Almost any item even if it has a lot of pours in it , just coat it with CA glue and give it a turn, There is one guy who claims he cut himself and dripped his blood all over a couple of tubes then sealed it with CA glue, I think he is lieing, and that is way to gross for me. Also with the resin kit you could wrap a picture of a loved one or a place you went to visit around a tube and pour in the resin, just watch that you don't have an ugly seam, try to cut at angles. The local kitchen counter guys have a ton of samples other than Corian and may even give you left over stuff from ajob for free, and you could cut up corian and glue in some wood , drill and turn.

This week I bought small flat sheets of styrene from a Hobby Shop and from a bearing supply shop plastic round in different sizes across to make spacers etc,on the IAP site recently a guy used styrene pieces to create a stunning pen you can get the sheets in thin to a couple of mm.
Best of luck in your experimenting. PeterLast edited by Penpal; 24th November 2007 at 02:52 PM. Reason: To correct spelling

Incorporation of other materials
Look up the International Association of Penturners. (penturners.org), join the forum and red their stuff. More help here than anywhere I've found.

I've been playing around with moose antler and getting fantastic results with pens and key chains,,,even buttons, lol with the leftovers.
I've heard of horn, bone, any antler is good,I've even stablized some porous antler to try that out.
Also, some antler can be whitened using a peroxide soak.careful though, read up on that,it gives off dangerous fumes I think.I didn't cover my peroxide jar as I heard someone s exploded because of pressure building up with the lid tightened.
Anyway, just my 2 cents on it.
Talk to you later guys,Steve
