Thread: Jarrah & black butt

Gorgeous!

Great looking pen. Similar to my chopping board, the colours were vibrant right up until I oiled it. Don't know why those 2 timbers together darken so much. I bet it beams in the sunlight? The rich red of the jarrah shining through. On the basis of the darkening effect the finish has I won't be puttingbthese 2 together again.

Please don't take this as negative feedback, quite the contrary, it's just my experience/observation with these 2 together and their effects once finished.

im yet to find a red and whit timber that hold their colours once finished.

Don't know if it's applicable, to your job, but I had the same difficulty conserving contrast between a couple of timbers in a job I was doing, when I oiled it the contrast diminished radically. I found that the best way was not to oil it direct, but to paint it with water-based estapol. This preserved the colour/tone contrast perfectly. I then sanded, gave the job another coat (this time of solvent-based estapol), and finally finished with wet and dry paper and a Scandinavian oil finish. The job really glowed and the colour contrast was striking. Very durable too.
