Jnr. Emperor Buck Eye Burl
Back to it, after almost a full month off! Had one piece of Buck Eye Burl and because Cisco keeps putting up those beautiful pens, thought I would give it a try. I had a choice of using Rhodium /Black Titanium or Rhodium/Gold, chose bthe Gold because the blank has much "grey" in it and seemed to offset that by having the gold. Much to my astonishment, the "grey" actual looks good???!! especially in presence. The finish is Shellawax glow, and many coats of CA, polished with Maguire's plastic polish and Show Car Glaze. Hope you like it. Amos
Now off to hunt for more Buck Eye Burl, I know Addictive's new website is a goer so will there, then Carroll's or GPW.Last edited by PenTurner; 23rd October 2008 at 10:52 PM. Reason: addition

Stunning, Amos, simply stunning. Somebody is going to love that pen. I actually exclaimed out loud when I opened the first picture. Beautiful swirls, great color.
That grey sorta grows on you, huh? When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Wow! what a stunning pen Amos, you have done that beautiful blank proud, outstanding.
As i have said before this buckeye burl is a fabulous material to work with.
I also use Ubeaut Shellawax under my wipe on poly it really brings out the beauty of the blank.
Someone is going to be very happy when the open that box.

Thanks for those comments, I gather you liked the pen, but my star pick is the "Constellation" Stateman by Cisco, it has stunning variety of curls and swirls. Amos

Great pen Amos. By gee, I thought that we had some great burl timber here in Aussie , but you would have to go a long way to find something better than that Buckeye

Terry, I wonder if the fact that is is double dyed and stabilized helps? Amos

Great pen Amos, that BEB looks fantastic.
I agree with you though with the double dye job and the stabilisation it gets closer to an acrylic than a timber pen.
That is not to detract from the pen you, as I said it is a fantastic looking pen, but comparing it to an Aussie burl (or any other timber blank) is like comparing apples to oranges.

Amos, double dyed and stabilized, that sounds like cheating. So that means that we do have good burl timber here in Australia.
Even if they cheat,it still looks great.

Not all buckeye burl comes dyed and stabilized though. I still have half a rather large chunk out in my shop and will have to take a photo later. Without dying and stabilizing, it is much lighter in color, and weighs nothing. Feels like balsa wood, and very punky. It drills and turned easily however, although you much use very sharp tools or the surface gets fuzzy quickly. Once turned and sanded, it looks very drab. This is where a quick swipe of BLO comes in handy. Never in my woodworking career have I seen a timber react more to BLO than undyed and unstabilized buckeye burl. It will quite literally change color before your eyes. A CA finish is mandatory with unstabilized buckeye to give it a hard shell protection. The first half dozen coats of CA drink right in to the surface and you really don't start to get a good buildup until after eight to ten coats. I suppose, in a way, I am stabilizing them at that point. In any case, once twenty coats of CA have been applied, they hold up as well as any other timber.
Beautiful pen there Amos. Rarely do I go back and look at the photos a second time, but in this case I can't seem to keep from looking again. When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.
