Jr Majestic
This pen is a Jr Majestic that I purchased from Gaz (Gpw) I have used a tulip wood blank given to me in a previous pen swap and finished it with 20 coats of medium CA polished with micro mesh and plastix polish.
As usual I am keen to hear what you think ?
Cheers Ian

Nice pen Ian.
I have a question for you. I have seen people post that they use 20 coats of med CA and sometimes more, for the finish. A couple questions come to mind because I too use med. CA as a finish. As a matter of fact I recently posted a couple segmented pens I did and finished those with 8 coats of CA. Now when I did this I had to overcut the blanks a bit to allow for the build up of these coats of CA. I usually do this practice.
My questions are why so many coats of CA??? Do you actually see any difference when you get that high in count??? I have not seen any depth of finish difference with 8 coats. Do you overcut the blank to allow for so many coats??? Finally do you have to sand the ends of the blank again because of buildup of CA??? Just seems like alot of finish. Thanks.

Hi JT. I always apply 20 coats of THIN CA. I turn down to the bushes, then sand lightly to 800. The sanding decreases the overall diameter about 1.5 thou, so the 20 coats of thin CA brings it back up to size. I have measured the thickness of 20 coats of thin CA using a Key micrometer, and it is very close to 2 thou. Don't forget that when Micro Meshing the CA finish you will lose probably 4 or 5 coats anyway, so there is your 0.5 of a thou. I can notice the difference between 10 coats and 20. With 20, the finish is glass like and zero dimples and flaws. I use 5 drops of thin CA per blank, per layer, applied with fine toilet paper (NOT second hand) and between each coat, a tiny burst of MitreFix.
I never forget anything I remember !!

Thanks everyone for your comments and to your question JT pariss has answered it beautifully execpt I lied (use to do it like this ) in my description of what I do as I now use THIN CA when finishing all my pens as I have found it works much better than the medium (in my opinion) and it finishes better. I am glad you like it GAZ and I must say for the price (Could be cheaper ) I reckon they are a great kit.
Cheers Ian

Totally agree with you Ian on these pen kits. They are sweet to set up and put together, everything fits perfectly. Great price too for an upper crust pen !. I'm letting my stock of pen kits & blanks run down now, to justify my annual trip down to Brisvegas and the Wood & working with wood show in May. Hope GPW will be there again this year, I have just bought an EXTRA large back pack to hold all the crap I'm going to buy, ha ha.I never forget anything I remember !!

Pariss I hate to disapoint you but I don't think Gary goes to the shows anymore but I am sure he will see my message here and come back and answer it. I thought last year he had a BBQ at his wharehouse all over the weekend and had specials there.
I agree with you when it comes to kits because I have enough kits of all variety to keep me going for ages
I just keep getting to the mailbox before my wife and then im fine and of course she is banned from the shed.
Cheers Ian

Yeah, ... your right. GPW wasn't there last year. I would imagine it is a mammoth task to set up and stock the display stall over the 3 day show. I hear you re- the missus. I do tend to get carried away a bit when ordering stuff on-line too, so I keep a weather eye out for the Fastway truck, and have an arrangement with them to hide deliveries up the side of the shed ha ha.

Hi JT. As Pariss says, its got to be cut back. However, if you finish with a Minwax Wipe on Poly (6 coats) over the CA you will be astounded with the finish. 3D mirror look.

Ok I understand the use of thin CA and the need for more coats. I used to use thin but have switched to med. Saves me alot more time. My 8 coats will probably equal to your 20. Someone mentioned poly over CA. I will leave that one to you. If you ever want to see a deep shine and a clear look into wood try using lacquer. There is nothing that will give the depth or clarity of a piece of wood than lacquer. With lacquer each coat is blended into the last one. With poly each coat lays on top and the clarity is clouded. Ask any woodworker that does flat work which finish they would prefer and it would be lacquer hands down. Now for toughness poly might win there but we should not be throwing our pens against a wall.
