latest knot pen
G,day geeze im getting old .
i finished another celtic knot pen last night .
chrome baron in hairy oak with a pecan knot .
i am a lot happier with this one than my first one a few days ago. i did make one other between the first one and this one , but i managed to stuff that one up it was a 6 veneer knot which had to be done on a round blank because a square blank just don't have enough sides.
all was good until dumb me made a boo boo and cut the ends of the extra long blank after making the knot and before drilling . the problem was that the ends had the centers marked on them where it was mounted in the lathe to turn it to round , then i put it in the drill vice and realized i had chopped of my center marks so i just lined it up by eye then drilled , not very smart a celtic knot drilled off center just don't work .so that blank sits on my bench to remind me .
anyway i diverse , this one is not to bad and i have learned a hell of a lot making these.
when time came to turn these blanks being hairy oak i was a tad worried about knocking off the corners , the only i chisel used was my new 1" oval skew that i got from the WWW show on the weekend , i love this chisel it beats my old skews hands by a mile ,i bought 2 , a 1" and a 1/2" HSS oval skew from mcjing unhandled , and they arte heaps better than my 30 odd year old henry taylor skews.

The learning never stops while you advance in this addiction, there are so many variations and different ways you can produce an elegant writing instrument ! As an apprentice I did a five year apprenticeship ,and that was only the start of the learning process hehe, With pens you can produce a worthy contender from the first day on the lathe ,so as time goes and skill and experience improve things just get better and better, its all about enjoying the learning, advancing your skills and making what is essentially a pen or pencil into a thing of lasting beauty and a joy to own and use .You seem to be well on the way to that goal so congrats from me I hope my "knots" when I get to them are as satisfying to me as they seem to be to you , cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

try 3200rpm maybe thats the diff,
can't you see the shape change when you start to take the corners off, its a bit like watching a wheel turn and when it gets to a certain speed it looks like its going backwards
all in all though i really like turning them, just need to get me a better saw and then i will be able to make my own rather than having to talk a friend into doing some more for meNo Result Without Effort

mik i just use the sliding compound miter saw for the slots and the bandsaw for making the slices .
i rekon with care it could be done just in an old wooden elcheapo miter box with a tenon saw ,

Excellent work texx, what finish did you use? Hairy Oak always takes a nice finish. What angle did you use, 45deg or 60deg? Great looking pen.
