Any broad guidelines to follow when gluing up scraps for pen blanks or is it pretty much open slather and see what happens ?

The grain generally goes longways ? - have tried cutting grain mounted at 90 degrees on a spindle and what a mess.

I've only ever used bought blanks or rectangular blanks cut from paddock timber.

scraps do mix well for pens, and you have a good mix of species/colors in this lot

hiya Bill, any wood glue should hold well enough for timbers, the trick starts when adding metal to the mix, it gets hot when you drill it which causes the glue to let go

most of my segmenting is done with wood only and i use Gorilla glue (the poly one), on all my knots and scollops and other segmenting ventures

i don't worry about grain orientation, cross grains and angle cuts can add character to woods that don't have any real features, just use a sharp skew and gentle cuts and remember sandpaper and CA are your friend

Hi Bill, I cut short pieces on an angle, any angle, to avoid butt joints. I use exterior aquadhere, not the polyurethane type, it sets hard. Any species mix seems to be ok as they are only small pieces. I avoid mixing end grain with long grain because they will move at different rates and the join can be felt. End grain on it's own is ok. Use a small spindle gouge, very sharp, for end grain. I am not big on pens now days but do do a lot of laminating and segmenting.
