New Lathe and My New Work Pen
well about 4 maybe 5 weeks ago i let the smoke out of the motor on my Lathe, try as i might there was no way i could get it back in
i was planning to start stashing away some pennies to save for the new beast, but alas the old one died all tooo soon, there was a fair bit of debating what to do which way to go
what the heck DO IT!!! so i have added a Vicmarc VL150 SM to the man cave, it arrived last night and YEP out of the box onto the bench and my new pen
this lathe is amazing, i hit the go switch and there is next to no noise but the spindle is spinning, it has electronic variable speed - GREAT INVENTION, and it even has an extra gear - REVERSE, i am very happy with the decision
the day the old one died, i had a blank in the pressure pot casting, so i have wait 4-5 weeks to turn this new pen, i looked at the blank every night, showed it off to many people as my new pen - got some dumb looks, where is the ink was the common response, a bit hard to hold was another
Well last night was the night
Ultra Cigar, dressed in a Mecha Watch parts blank, it took about 4 hours to make the blank, 6 hours to cast in a pressure pot at 50psi, i think it came up a treat
thanks for looking
all thoughts, comments and criticism welcome, don't drool into your keyboard though please

Congrats on both the lathe and the pen!!!
That is the best Ultra Cigar I have ever seen!! It's not a kit I like but
your blank matches it perfectly.!!

Hi MIK
Great looking lathe!
I have now owned my Vicmarc for 7 years and it's still so enjoyable to use! You made the right decision, I would still strongly recommend a Vicmarc.
The pen looks great! You must be proud of that one.
Thanks for sharing

thanks for the feedback guys, i hope you didn't get too much drool in your keyboard
i appreciate all of the offers to swap lathes but this baby has a home, and is very comfortable right where it is
i will say though, save your pennies, i have only had it for one day and i am sooo happy that i choose this route after the death of the old faithful yellow peril
any ideas on what i should do with the old one, the motor is dead so i think it is only good for the recycle man
you may have also noticed the crappy one sitting under the bench, i think i may need to clean out the shed one day soon
i should give the lathe a bit more of a workout today, hopefully
quite a few people have already tried to acquire/steal my new pen, i had a brain storm last night, with a couple of new ideas for watch parts on Mecha so keep an eye out over the next couple of weeks, i just have to get in the mood for some hand bending
all the best

I'm sure there would be many 'as is' takers on your old lathe. Even my club may be interested. Our demo lathe is a home made job. It's got to be better than what we are using.
As for drool - I had to take my iPad off the keyboard and use touch screen. Fortunately I have a screen protector which keeps the drool off the home button and if used vertical the bottom acts like a drip lime stopping any capillary action of the drool wrapping around the bottom and getting into the charging port lol

That is a nice lathe and should give you many years of turning. As far as the pen goes, yes it is nice but not for me. Good luck with the lathe.

Mik ! not sure how much a replacement motor is for the Woodfast ,but I converted mine to a VSD from PSI a few years back and I think the cost was around $200 including shipping and buying a small step down transformer off E Bay ,for pen turning where speed changes are a neccesity, from turning sanding polishing ,doing it on the fly is a big advantage , the kit came with switches and controller and the mounting plate . May not be of much use to you now with the vicmark hehe, but don't write off the little Yellow monster totally Neil (dai sensei ) did the same thing and his little monster is now touring Australia as a demo machine, not the machine ,but Neils skills on show hehe. And I agree with the amount of work and time you should be proud of that pen and its almost impossible to get it's true value if sold, far better to enjoy it yourself hehe. Cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!
