Olive problems
I recently collected some olive branches from Wagga (over 100 years old) and made a couple of nice pens, I made some blanks out of the beautiful inner timber, by quartersawing them but when I turn them they explode. Any IdeasAttachment 135103

Yes, make sure you use 5 min epoxy, rough up the brass with sand paper, apply epoxy to the inside of the blank evenly-don't miss a spot or you will pay for it, then epoxy the brass tube and insert, clean out any residue, some people put potato or play dough in the ends of the brass tube to keep epoxy from going inside.
When you turn cross cut it has to be sharp and fine cuts, especially once you get to around 4 or 5 mil to turn off,; If it is getting tiresome, walk away and come back in 5 minutes, then LIGHT cuts. If you are thinking I will sharpen this in another couple of cuts-STOP immediately and go sharpen it! AmosGood, better, best, never let it rest;

What Amos said (except I use a different glue)
And I've found that with cross cut or diagonal cut I get better results if I attack it from each end
But I've had my best disasters like yours when I've been too aggressive (Zebra wood hates me!)regards

When I first read this post a couple of hours ago I was going to suggest that, as I thought you were turning end grain , you should take really light cuts and make sure that your glueing regime was really, really good. But then I thought, "what would I know , I've only been doing this stuff for a few months? I'll leave it to the experts for their opinion."
Then Woodenink comes along and says the same.
I just knew that after 3 months experience in wood turning, I would be an expert!
but then, why have i got all those broken bits of timber lying around the floor??
Why did that new chisel handle fly out of the chuck and smack the wall this afternoon?
- must be the lathe.
Maybe I should give it another month....

Avery!! how come the chisel missed you???!!, you have to angle it correctly to be hit!!, those little bits on the floor reminds me of my floor-----very easy to advise people based on experience! Amos

Thanks, so do you mean lack of attention to gluing may be a cause of blowouts, I have also had a few problems with burls. I do tend to walk past the shed to do a job and end up trying to quickly turn a pen on the way through !, great fun though

Clarky, in my case I KNOW for a fact that pushing to fast has cost me too many blanks, both in drilling and turning, and sometimes when I have been careful and got to the last bit, The portion that blew off was just a tiny piece where I thought I had glued but the glue missed that little bit--very frustrating, but great satisfaction when you do it right, Amos
