Yeah.. this was a nice surprise. He's burning cherry for firewood.. along with the burls!

Right now it's tan/pink/yellow. In 20 years it will be a deep red.
I couldn't wait ti try it out, even though I'm still having round/oval problems and
need a magnifier over the lathe. but I decided to waste an old kit just to try it out.

Parts don't line up, they're off center etc. etc. I don't care, I just HAD to try it out!
The parts are just stuck together with wax.. I didn't want to waste any more brass
tubes.(if you pick it up, it falls apart.. HA!!)

Great piece of burl. I had a small block of black cherry burl, and did not like working with it. It did not have the color or figure that yours does....The pen looks awesome.

Oh this disease with which we are inflicted.

I was driving down the road the other day when I noticed a burl, on a tree, in someone's yard, and it was old and dying and beginning to lean.

That was all good and well, what was bad was I made a note to keep it under surveillance, so that when I falls on over I can pop in and offer to remove it for them.

    I'm stalking someone's tree.

A cure, when will someone make a cure.

I know some turners who have offered to pay me to spot such trees! They'll load up
the truck with saws, chains etc. and we'll go get them. They'd pay me in blanks.
I haven't done it so far.

But if the tree is dying, you might be doing them a favor to take it down, pull the
stump and cart it all away for them. If your price is reasonable, they might even
    appreciate the offer.

And if they ask why you're dipping each piece in wax as you cut it, just tell them
    you're allergic to tree sap.

That's a beautiful burl. Cherry is such an under-rated timber. I work with a girl who casually mentioned last week that her uncle burns the burls in his wood stove because they last so long. I asked her to get me some the next time she sees him. Have to wait to see what, if anything, comes of that.

I'm curious though - any way to speed up the darkening transition? Without staining of course.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.
