Default Is this overkill for turning pens on???

Recently picked this beauty up for $425.00. He started at $800.00 and I just watched his price go down week after week until I couldn't stand it anymore. It's a Powermatic 90, 700lbs of pure beast.

Just for scale reference, here's a picture of it next to the lathe it's replacing which is the Harbor Freight Jet replica.

I have a new tool rest and bowl rest on order as the one that came with it was pretty bent up. It has a 1hp single phase motor on it, but in the picture you can see the 3/4hp 3phase motor that came with it. I'm pondering a phase converter with speed control built in so I can put the original motor cover back on for use.

Hopefully I'll be posting some pics up in the bowl turning section soon.

Nice one! You could turn very big pens on that one!

    Softball/baseball bats too.

You might also be able to get a compatible single-phase motor for it.

Not at all....A Jet VS mini lathe can start at $349.99, so $425.00 for a big lathe is great...plus it is an older Powermatic, solid castings all the way around, and as you already know, it is heavy.

You can turn almost anything you want to, from pens to big vessels...

    Great buy.

So... the question no-one has asked: how're the bearings?

Still, at a mere $425, who cares even if they are knackered? It'd still be a good buy!

Congratulations. Especially on having enough room for it. I have the same HF machine (same as MC900), and IT's crowded in my sliding-block puzzle of a "shop."

You should be able to get manuals for it at Old Woodworking Machines - http://www.owwm.com/

Bearings are smooth as silk, I actually picked it up at a local machine shop. The owner is upgrading to a Oneway machine.

I don't reckon I'll ever need to buy another lathe again......

Actually I have pondered painting it, but if I do it won't be mustard.

This is actually a very early Grizzly cabinet saw that was a pukey green when I picked it up at auction. I figured since I'm probably gonna keep it forever might as well dress it out the way I'd like. So I got some new Grizzly decals and painted it with black semi-gloss engine enamel, after almost two years the enamel has held up very well.

The PM90 has more paint missing than the cabinet saw did, but it's also about 550lbs heavier so a restore would be more work. That will probably have to wait a few months.

Gives me plenty of times to ponder color options!

You do realize the closest thing Powermatic makes to that old girl is the Model 4224, and it runs between $5400.00 and $6000.00 depending on the extra goodies you want?
And you can do everything on your lathe the 4224 can do...plus I think your lathe will turn a bigger bowl with that notch in the bed....

Dude, you made a heck of a buy.

And the gold/green metal flake was Powermatic's original colors for years and years...

I'm wondering when you plug it in whether the lights in your suburb will dim... better let the local hospital know when you are going to do some turning so they can spin up the generator first )

Nice buy - hope you don't need to move it around at all....
