First pen
My first attempt at pen turning. Stumbled and faltered as I watched youtube trying to work out the steps and how they are put together. I can see straight away that the blanks need to come down in diameter to meet the bushing. Any comments, advice etc appreciated.

Yes get the ends down to the bushing sizes so it all flows and you'll be on a winner. Nice crosscut blank by the way, what is it?

I finished this with shellawax as that's all I have. I hear peole using CA quite often. Apart from CA what else can be used to finish the blanks? Would aubeaut's ussie oil be good or the hard shellac?

See Pat's Roman Harvest with an Aussie Oil finish. There's also Glow from Ubeaut

Another question where do you get you kits from a and do they vary in quality. As I will only be doing these for fun and friends I'd like some good kits as the few extra $$ won't really make any difference.

Great going on your first pen.
You can keep the middle part of the pen thicker if so desire just as long as the ends meet the bushings. Apart from CA as a finish I am preferring to use wipe on poly applying 3 to 5 very thin coats.

NICE. I've been making pens with poly clay for years. JUST got a lathe a few months ago and wow… I'm hooked.
My first ever (issues with the finish.)

That's a friction polish by the way. First pen I didn't get it hot enough. I later went back with a dremel buffer wheel and got it a lot nicer.
As for where to get pens, the best, cheapest, most variety would be
https://www.pennstateind.com
But another really good site would be
WoodTurningz
Now they will tell you right off that they buy their pens from pennstateind so the mark up is slightly higher.
BUT should you ever have problems with say assembly? Call them. They are all wood turners so know their stuff. Pennstateind are just warehouse people. Not much help if you have assembly issues.
(I have with a few of their click kits. To be avoided…. all of them.)
woodturningz sometimes has better prices on other stuff so I always check both.
