    Default First Pens 'n stuff

G'Day all... here are some of my first pens 'n stuff. The slimline pen and the perfume applicator are from the timber shown, I'd like to know what it is - from a tree I cut down in a friend's yard. Turns well and dries without much splitting. The pencil is from RedGum and the knife handle is from a blackwood offcut near a knot.

    Hey Hey,

Good work , I have been doing the same over the last two weekends.

I will put mine up on the weekend If i can get them back from the wife, I like pens as they are quick to make and fun as well as the felling that I have accomplished something in a short time.
I like to move it move it, I like to move it.

That is some lovely turning, with pleasing shapes. Can't guess the timber though , the more experienced members may be able to help there. The pen probably could have polished up a little more, how did you finish it? Amos

Thanks for the encouraging comments! The pen was sanded to 800 then used EEE. Then Shellawax finish. The heartwood finished better. Next time I'll go to finer paper before finishing. Not sure if I'm ready to try CA yet... (or is that treading into the "dark side")

The timber has no real smell so is not camphor laurel... leaves were grey/green about an inch long, half inch wide. Lots of suckers growing from the cut stump...

    Mate,
Your pens make mine look ordinary. Good work. Sorry, can't help you with the wood.

It's always good to see someone experimenting with forms beyond the ol' double spindle shape. I like what you've done but in my personal opinion the stock centre band is too small for those shapes... it gives 'em a wasp-waisted appearance that looks like they'd be uncomfortable to hold.

Have you given any thought to turning your own custom bands or doing away with them altogether?
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

They are very nice pens, but maybe a more shiny finish would make them even better, Have you heard about Organoils high speed turning oils ?
They polish pens very well and they are non-toxic too, my woodwork teacher swears by it.

ive been using shellawax creams and friction polishes too

Thanks for the feedback Skew, I hadn't thought of a custom band so I will try with a contrasting colour timber.

On the finish, I am still experimenting and getting higher gloss with more time spent... (hate that..) I'll look around for the organoil range.
