    Default Pens for year7

Hi guys just noticed this forum as I am returning to the site. I have been making pens with students for about 8 years now and I can say they love it. Teachers love it to as the boys are now coming to class with a pen. I'll look in from time to time to get some hints, particularly on high gloss hard finish on wooden pens.

CA will be the biggest reply but I doubt if students will be allowed in a closed in environment and with so many students doing it the fumes would be over powering.

There is the WOP Wipe On Polly but it has drying time problems.

Lacquer is next best I have been using Timberlac a Nitrocellulose Lacquer of course there are others its quick drying easy to apply (by a fine Saple brush). I have test run it on my sons 3 pens and all are doing well in his varied work environment from office to workshop floor and out on site. Even allows clients to sign with them. Its now over 12 months.

I will admit I prefer Satin not High gloss.

    Hi MarcusH
you would do better posting this question in the Pen Turning main section (not the pen turning challenges) as it would be seen by more and commented on by more .... I too have done pens with school kids and they do love them, but I don't do CA and can't see many having the patience for wipe on poly ... I use the UBeaut polishes.

Kids and CA, not necessarily a good combination . I'd be thinking about a dipping technique with Nitro type product so it is quick. There are a few threads on this and videos.

I'm new for the site and just feeling my way round. Never heard of this nitro product. Is it good? I'll have to search for these threads.

Finally got around to seeing this thread although a long time after the last comment.

Nitrocellulose will give you a great finish but DON'T breath in the fumes or you will run a good chance of a headache like a migraine, similar to the one I got,but it might just be me. MinWax is a good finish and won't glue your fingers to blanks or make you wish you had stayed in bed rather than cope with the headache you can get with Nitro. Have a look in the tutorials at Les' MinWax Poly finish.

Hey mate I don't like the idea of nitrocellulose, that is an explosive product. Simple percussion sets it off.

Been a while since nitrocellulose was made with nitro here in Aus, these days although it is called the same, it is an acrylic product. Apart from smell and highly flammable, it is relatively safe to my understanding.
