Default New photos with light tent

I knocked up a light box/tent today , these are some pens I made previously.
I rephotographed them to try out my new setup.

I am fairly happy with it mostly, just have to experiment with different colour backgrounds. All these are taken with a piece of olive-grey cardboard, it has upset the colour balance with the gold plating. A bit of experimenting should see better results.

Let me know what you think.

    Hey Brad,
if I could make a few suggestions , try taking the photo's in the raw format as opposed to jpeg and adjust the white balance to a more pleasing colour. Other than that they look good.
    Great effort.
    Cheers ,

I think I agree with Bruce Because I think he is saying what I would like to say and what I mean by that is that there must be some way that you can change the background of the photo so it make the pen stand out more with regards to the actual photo of the pen the photo and the actual pen look great well done
By changing the background would really complete the Pic.

You have lost me a bit there Bruce, how do I get them to a raw format ?

Do I have to do that on the camera?

Edit; I know its a bit hard to see them clearly, but did you recognise the black and white resins on the pair of pens ? I think you may have had a hand in them.

I think your saying what I am thinking also Ian.

I am definetely no photo guru, I had a play around with some settings on iPhoto, but couldn't get them how I wanted the colours to look.

On the photo of the black and white pair, I dropped the saturation, and it seemed to bring out the gold on the pens a bit better. By doing that seems to have changed the background colour a bit.

I ran out of time this afternoon, but will have another go tomorrow and try some different backgrounds.

I want to get so I can take consistently good photos without spending more time than it took to make the pen. The light box/tent seems to be heading in the right direction, just need to sort the colours out

Hey Brad. Don't know if it will help but I seem to get OK results with my outdoor photo arrangement, which is pretty basic. Not direct sunlight. Just a sheet of 6mm ply, and some filtered afternoon light. Sometime I put a sheet of red felt over the bit of ply. The secret is in the indirect outdoor lighting.

Cheers Pariss, your photos are pretty good alright.

I have been using the natural light method for a couple of years now, the results are good when the conditions are just right. We seem to be overcast or raining most of the time for the last few years, so my results are inconsistant at best.
I am also busy about 18 hours a day nearly every day, so I dont always get to do things at the ideal time. Hence my wanting to build a light box/tent so I can do things at any time I have a spare minute or two.
I will perservere with this until I get it right.
I did a bit of googling earlier, found out a bit about the raw format that Bruce was talking about, looks like it is a matter of changing settings on the camera, then you have more options to change things once you get the pics onto your PC., will have a play with that tonight hopefully.

I am no camera expert but from what I understand not all camera's give you that chance to set your camera into Raw format ? Surely someone out there will know for sure.

    Hi Brad ,
yeah , the resins look familiar.
I shoot all my photo's using raw format as it allows more latitude (it contains more info.)for manipulating the images, most cameras have this function. There is also a free download called PicMonkey that's a great program for changing the look of photo's. In your photo below I increased the exposure a little and changed the colour balance to take out the colour cast. It looks like you took the image as a jpeg which doesn't give much room too play with. An analogy might be a raw pic is an encyclopedia and a jpeg is a magazine , this is hard for me to explain all this in a paragraph. I hope I haven't confused you too much.
    Good luck ,
    Bruce

'Raw Format' is what 'Nudist Monthly' photographers use ......

I just wish I knew what 'format' meant. 'Raw' - I have been familiar with in my younger years .

My son in law is coming over to do my pen photos. He reckons he is going to use my photo tent with a flash on the outside. We will see

Great photos Pariss. I will get a piece of ply when next at Bunnings and try your set up. The white paint over the ply allows a rough finish to show through in the ply which should work well - Actually it already has!
