Well a bit of playing around this afternoon, My camera doesn't have the option to set to raw format unfortunately. I am stuck with Jpeg.

It does have a white balance function when you put the camera in manual, I tried that this afternoon, I got a bit of an improvement, but still not the result I am after.

First pic is with the same background as yesterday, 2nd is with a charcoal coloured floor tile, 3rd with same tile.

Next try will be some different bulbs, I have been using those new compact flouro's that fit into a bayonet fitting, might try some incandescent bulbs and see if it makes any difference.

Great photos Pariss. I will get a piece of ply when next at Bunnings and try your set up. The white paint over the ply allows a rough finish to show through in the ply which should work well - Actually it already has!
Hi Greg. The ply is not painted, just plain clean ply.

    Canon ixus 750.
Just a little compact camera, a few years old now.

I used to have a few SLR's back in the "film" days, but never seemed to progress that far once digital took over.

OK, some good progress today. Did some reading up online, then went and spoke with a friendly guy at "Garricks Camera House" in Mackay.

First of my problems that became evident was I was using 2 different types of light source, flouro inside the light box and halogen was going in from the front beside the camera to light the front of the object. Found out that this is bad, so for now I have ditched the front lighting. Will get back to it later with the correct bulbs.
I bought a proper 18% grey card from Garricks to properly set my white balance.

These are some new pics quickly taken, the background I have used on these is a grey Tshirt. I cropped a couple of them, and played around with iPhoto, but found I couldn't get them much better by tweaking them, so left them pretty much as is..

So I am happier now with the colour balance, just have to work on the composition now to get pleasing photos. And sort something out with the front lighting.

Fire away with the comments on the photos please.

    Thanks Ian.
Can you tell me why you like the last Sedona pic the most, is it because the background is less textured and looks cleaner (if you know what I mean ) and more focus is on the pen.

Just trying to get a feel for what people prefer to look at .

That's a great improvement. I agree with Ian on the lighter background as the pens stand out more without the eye being distrcted to the darker colour. What type of light are you using in the last photos and where is it placed?

Well not totally sure on why I like the sedona pic the best but I think it's mainly just because it is a nice clear pic and all the focus (Just a choice of word) on the pen itself. The First sedon pic to me looks the best and also the sharpest. I am not keen on the really light background.

Just to confirm Ian, is it the Sedona on the olive/grey cardboard that you like the most ?

    Thanks Greg.

The lights I am using are the compact flouro's that fit into a bayonet fitting. There are 3 of them inside the light box, one on each side and one on the top.
They are positioned just behind where the pen sits, so its casting a bit of a shadow at the front, thats why I had the 2 halogen lights beside the camera , to light up the front of the pen, but I had to turn them off because they were upsetting the colour balance.

I may move the 2 side flouro's forward a bit to light the front of the pen and see how that goes before I buy more lights to sit at the front of the light box.
