What printer are you using for waterslide decals?
What make/model printer are you using to print waterslide decals? I've got a Brother DCP-J315W and am less than impressed with the results I'm getting. I've adjusted the settings as many different ways as I can conceive and am yet to produce a satisfactory result. I'm prepared to buy a new printer just for the transfers but really don't want to spend a truckload of money to get it.
Over to you team... what are you using and are you happy with the results? It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

I know you need to get the right paper to print on, either ink jet or laser.
I have used the laser ones and have had good results from it.
I've printed old tile images onto them and then transfer to new white tiles.
I have not done anything really small and expecting high detail, (like something to go around a pen tube for casting).
But my 6x8 inch tiles come out nice for framing.

Hi Corbs,
Not that I have done a lot of decals, but I have done some and never had any issues with the quality. I have used a HP 6310 Ink Jet. Most printers are pretty cheap these days though. Im sure they make their money back for the cheapness of the printer on their ink cartridges.
Cheers

Hi All
I'm using a Canon MG6360 inkjet with good results. Only problem was the transfer must be inkjet transfers, and the origin picture must be of high
quality, and after printing let it dry out for at lest 30min before spraying it with clear lacquer
god luck

I use a Hp Photosmart 7520 Inkjet for $200.00.
The images you want to transfer must be good quality.
Make sure you have the right good quality decal paper.
Works great for me.

Sorry, I should have been clearer... I have inkjet decal paper
I do have another question now though... what application/software do you print from? I've been creating my image and rotating in photoshop then saving as a jpg and inserting into a word document which I print from. I'm beginning to wonder if the word document is causing my problems. It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Corbs we use publisher to print from, but I see no reason why you can't print from Photoshop,in its native resolution .I think that word is ok for onscreen stuff ,but will not have the resolution of dedicated graphics programs like photoshop and Ac-Dc or any number of graphics programs ,even google has a free graphics program that should work ,the higher defination of your graphic, the better your results will be cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

The only thing you should be using Word for is....well, I can't actually think of any reason why I'd use Word. For anything. Including word processing.
Print direct from Photoshop. The colour management options can be a bit bewildering at first, but worth it once you understand what it's all about.
Just create an A4 (or decal sheet size as appropriate) canvas and then you can fill it with as many images as you can fit before printing. Remember to allow for any no-print borders on your printer and away you go.
Images should be:
At least 300 dpi at the size you want to use them (no upscaling)
Converted to RGB (easier) or CMYK (for tweakers)

Got to ask, what are you printing? A crappy scanned tiny image?

Thanks John & MS. I tried in Photoshop but didn't have the settings as fine as 300 dpi (the default was 70 I think) so the result wasn't very good. I also had an issue I couldn't figure out sizing one of the images I wanted to print.
I have MS publisher on the computer and tried with that. So far publisher has given me by far the best results. I think the issue was a combination of lower res pics and word (this being the bigger of the two issues). I will probably continue using publisher as I can use it in the same way as word and don't have to learn new techniques but will continue making my images in photoshop.
Time for another question, does it matter which side of the decal you use? I was flipping the image and putting the side away from the backing paper against the blank but watching some tutorials online they were using the side against the backing paper which negates the requirement to flip the image. It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Hi
I have always used publisher with avery label plugin that give you preformed areas to put you pictures in, for what side I always put backing side against the pen blank but after 2-3 layers of ca and if the job is critical I polish with micro mesh before decal is put on

I use Microsoft Excel 2010 by inserting the image I want and then resize to fit the brass tube I will be using.
Don't need any additional software.
Works great for me.
