QUEENSLAND WALNUT SIERRA and Apricot

As it says, this is Qld Walnut, really smells when cutting and turning, it is a Sierra pen, finished with Rustins Plastic Coating, but because it did not really shine, even after burnishing,

I finished with EEE and Shellawax.

The colour and grain seem plain, but looking at it in presence there seems a mature distinct look about the wood. Now for you valued opinions, thanks Amos

The last two pics are Apricot from Old Dog, grain is inviting. Amos

Amos I like the Qld Walnut, looking at the photo it seems to have a tight grain structure to it. You are right in saying it has a mature look, almost a presence of strength to it. Pity you couldn't nail the finish, I know you will next time. The apricot has a lovely grain patern and colour to it. Is it a soft timber to turn or does it it have similar qualities that fruit woods have. Clean cutting and having a good density to the timber?

Great looking pens. Like both of them but prefer the walnut.

I feel for you as I have the same trouble with finishes never seem to get them right.

Making my own plexiglass finish at the moment wil see how that goes

Thanks , will get that finish right sooner or later, both timbers were quite easy to turn, more so the Apricot, the Walnut being thicker and tighter in its grain. Let me say that sometimes i get frustrated when I do the finish and it turns out average

Amos just as a suggestion try thinning the plastic coating down a bit so it gets in to the timber ? just a thought .

Amos both pens look very nice,But the APRICOT is very sentimental too me as my mum planted this tree when she was a young girl about seventy years ago she also died very young she was only 43 years old the tree also died a few years ago and my dad was lucky too save it from being burnt,also some of the turned bowls we have done using this wood have turned out fantastic being a lot bigger it shows off the grain a lot better' anyway Amos thanks for showing us your work it looks great.

Amos,
I like the look of both woods. The Walnut does have a quiet serious sense about it, but the apricot sure does have some nice grain and color. I have had a couple of woods, like wenge that just do not like to finish as nicely as I would like them to.

Nice pens. The Apricot reminds me of Cypress for some reason. I bet 'twas a lot easier to turn, though!

I'm sorta surprised that you couldn't get a gloss with the Rustin's... I usually find it's the other way around and looks too shiny. I often hit it with EEE to matt it down!

Didn't want to start a new thread, here is another Apricot from the same piece, it had a natural crack at one end, so I had to keep CA on it. I put the Clip over it so it wouls not be as obvious, Amos
