Default Re gloat thrid runner up

This is the third runner up to my grand champion piece. The pen kit as well as the antler was supplied by Addictive Pen Kits. The kit is an El Grande kit. It is my pride and joy for a few reasons, the section it was entered in was Any Turned Item up to 400mm, the same section as my champion piece as well as my Sedona pen.

The first reason is that the judge had the courage to judge an individual original hand crafted writing instrument against items of 400mm in size and to judge them second and third best in all wood turning gives me hope that people will realize that pen crafters can compete with other wood turning.

The second reason, I could have sold my writing instrument at least 12 times, in the end I sold it for $120 so I was pleased with that.

The third reason being is that I love working with antler and it was my first piece I have turned for months. I have tried sourcing it myself, but haven't had much luck in quality. I just said in passing to Brett about not being able to get decent antler and before the show it was hey got some stuff for you.

It is quality stuff, smallest is around 35mm round and a bit bigger and it is about 130mm long, I think I bought around 5 or 6 pieces at $14 may be wrong with the price but just with Brett if I got it wrong. Antler is a different medium to work with but you are well rewarded I think, just check it out. Plus I am kicking myself I didn't get any elk antler, it is a lot darker in the center of the antler and give a great look to a pen.

This particular pen I have cut it so I have a bit of the outer antler and the inner fibrous core. By doing that you can reveal some different colours as well as patterns. It is the same as punky wood you back fill with CA and let dry to the air, don't use accelerator. Then you finish as you would The CA finish. I think Rustins would be possible. but those who use it might give it a go if you get any antler.

So who would think that an individual original hand crafted writing instruments would be second and third runner up to the grand champion. On a side note yes thats what I tell customers they are buying, it sounds petter than I make pens I think and the customers have the wow factor on their face when they hold it in their hands.

Yeah I have rambled, and even though it was third this is my favourite of the 2 pens. Well see what you think
    Cheers
    Darren

Amos, it is just a fantastic thing to work with, antler. The textures if you retain antler bark, the colours from cutting into the center of the antler. Even though I used gold it still was a handsome pen, but you put it up on black titanium and it is just wow. even if a person only tries it once or twice it commands a good price any time you make one.

    Darren,
As we still haven't seen the rest of the pics (especially the one that won), I can't imagine what the winner looked like lol. That is one of the best looking deer antler pens I have seen. Makes me think I am going to have to make another one which means I am going to have to open the shop door when I work on it and suffer the spring heat as the missus hates the smell of it. Nicely done.
