    Default Rubber finger grips ????

A good mate of mine wants to make some pens for xrissy presents so they'll fit in his luggage and the kits he got have got a rubber finger-grip included. Couldn't find anything with a search but figure someone here must have used them before. What's the trick to them ??? . Do you ....
    a. clean up the end of the blank before gluing it on the sleeve and glue it at a set position along the tube???
    b. fit the rubber sleeve on and then glue the blank on behind it, completing the pen with the rubber in place???
    c. not use the rubber bits ???

The ones I've used slip over the brass tube in the same way as some centre-bands do on caps. So you simply turn the end of the blank down to the tube to accommodate them. Or cut the blank shorter in the first place, but still slightly longer than needed so you can trim it square on the lathe.

Either way, the blank is glued to the tube first and the rubber is slipped on during final assembly. When bringing the blank to final size I often stop and quickly dry-fit the rubber until I get a good match. There's probably a bushing out there somewhere that'd slip over the tube to give you final size, but I don't do many and haven't bothered looking.

I was also given a couple of a type that only need a tenon turned on the blank, but I don't like 'em and won't be looking for replacements...
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

The ones I have just go over the bottom of the lower barrel, I never use them just make the pen as you would a slimline. They are a little bigger than a slimline that's all. They are called comfort pens

    Two types of instructions Vern

I make a lot of these pens and it is easier if you make the tube the regular length and then cut off 1" from the nib end. This way you get a closer fit to the wide end of the rubber or silicone. I use a caliper to get the final sizing and I use a parting tool to ensure that the end that sits against the rubber fits well and is flush. They are a good pen for someone with arthritis.
