Sampler Pen
Hi all,
Have been playing with ideas for pens and I guess a few of you already do this... but it was my first so I thought I would share. The woods are from front to back,
Burl (unknown), Olive, Ossage Orange, Grevillea, Ossage Orange, Burl (unknown)
All bits were offcuts sitting around the bandsaw and I glued them up with some left over epoxy from another job. I would have liked to have 8 different types of wood in the pen but that was all the offcuts I could find and I didn't know how it would look (maybe next time). I don't like the centre band and will turn another for it when I get the chance but it will do for now.
Enjoy...

it's a good design, but the pen lacks pezazz,
in other words, and this is only constructive criticism, its a little boring.
needs to stand out more.
still, it's a nice pen.
Beware!!!!!!

Corbs, take the centre band out now. Then press it back together this will make the pen look 100% better. You have did a great job but the centreband is choking it

Ok then... centre band is gone and it does look better, will still make one or sort something out in its place down the track. The pen was just a play with a cheap kit I had lying around and some scraps of wood. The glue was even left over from another job. Without the band, the taper isn't quite right and its an optical illusion making the pen look crooked .

that does look better without the center band,
and it does look a little crooked, but hey, it's an optical illusion.

That looks much better Corbs
Maybe strip it back and re place on the mandrill with the two blanks butted together and try and align it.
Those little bands are a pain if you want to experiment beyond the limitations of it. As you see no band is necessary or you could drill a 7 mm hole in a another matching piece and fit together and machine again.
Good to see you are looking beyond the square
Keep it up

I thought I'd already replied to this early on, but my post seems to have gone AWOL.
I've found that for "mismatched"" woods like the ones you've used, it's often more effective to cut/glue them at random angles instead of in plain bands as you've done. It gives it a pleasing patchwork effect and makes it look less "contrived."
Just a suggestion for something to try the next time.

All suggestions are taken onboard and appreciated. This one was just a play around but it has given me a few more ideas on how I can do things differently. Will keep it the way it is for now as a reminder of things I have learnt from this pen. Got a heap of blanks today and a few more kits so will keep playing around and see where it takes me.
Cheers,
