All I do is gently rub the blank lengthwise with extra fine steel wool to get the semi-gloss or satin finish I want.
    Works great.

I remember seeing on the IAP where Johnathon Brooks was using a butane flame to take the shine off a CA finish. It looked good.

I use exactly the same method as super glossy CA finish (sand to 600 grit, put on multiple coats of thin CA, polish with micro-mesh).
The only difference is I stop after the first couple of grades of micro mesh. Still has a great quality finish, but more satin and subdued than a super high gloss.

I apply CA as normal to a gloss then add 1 extra coat as I rub it in it goes to a matt finish just before going to a gloss at that point I stop and let it dry fully. You can see the effect on two pens I posted. HERE and HERE The first link it is the one with the ali powder.
