Seated Pen Turning
HI Guys,
I am writing to ask anyone that has set up a seated lathe set up for pen turning what have you found that works and what does not. I have been told by my OT to get back into something that i love and give me a great lot of pleasure lot of things I am unable to do such as lift weight forever, stand, or bend. Gees this list can go on more than what I can no longer do than what I can do. So my main things is I remember the thrill I had penmaking and turning So can you guys help me with some ideas on how to set up for it seated? What have you found that works and what doesn’t
Thanks Toni

Bugger, I dread the day when I can no longer stand at my lathe and produce things of joy and pleasure, as a retired fitter and turner all my working life has been mostly standing at a lathe or some other machine, and woodturning has just continued that for me . practically you will need good organisation of your work space so all things are at a level you can deal with, a clear floor space and a mobile chair ,either one of those mechanics types, ( a padded box on wheels ) or something with a backrest to help you when just sitting , this will enable you to scoot from place to place without having to get up all the time ,you can drill blanks on the lathe no big problem ,you can glue on a table a bit low so you don't have to bend too much, trimming can also be done on the lathe ,so the basics can all be done seated ,you will also need the lathe height at a comfortable working height ,most likely sit on your chair at normal height .put out your arms straight straight and that is where I would start with centre height of your lathe , a variable speed lathe would help so you don't have a lot of belt changing hope some of this is a help to you as it is just theory from my point of view, good luck with it and keep on keeping on cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

Have a short scroll below an article i put in about how I organise my turning on the pen lathe. I dont have to sit but I choose to sit to turn. I sit on an Draughtsmans Swivel chair the line drawing pic shows that. In fact so comfortable I find it I just set up another bench to use Dremels and setting out with another such chair nearby.
Have success sitting down I do but my memory tells me your husband used to drill, cut blanks etc so you should be OK.
Kind regards Peter.Nil Desperandum

Both Oneway and Vicmarc have sit down lathes. Some ideas in them you could adapt to your needs if you don't want to buy.

Hey Toni good to see your back here. Your ears must be burning some of us have been talking about your "Pens for The Troops" its now even on FB.
Like Pen Pal I use a draughtsman gas lift stool height adjustable I do my short stand up out of the wheelchair, pins not strong enough and lower back. I have mounted better quality wheels on so I can go wheelnround the workshop without having to get back into the wheelchair and visa versa.
Lathe set up I have the Jet mini (my pen turning lath of late) on a bench which is uncomfortable in the long run, I have to spread my legs ATM as under is a stash of wood but I have everything at hand well almost.
At the Nova its a steel framed set up with leg room under and I can get in nice and close swivel head is great advantage.
Even spraying I am at a comfortable work height I can lower it raising it back up for me is APIA have to be at the back bench or off in the wheelchair and climb back up.
I think from memory you have 2 lathes also

Hey Toni,
Welcome Back, hope your recovery is speedy,
I had a look at the Little Lathe at Gary Pyes shop when I was there in June, nice looking Little Unit, I haven't had a play on one, but In my Opinion it looks the goods.
