My first solo effort
Ok guys, I finally got a chance to do my first timber pen.
I'm using a kit from Carbatec. It was labeled as goldfields burl. However there's lots of different trees that grow in the goldfields so I've no idea what the timber is.
I must say I'm reasonably happy with the finish and shape of it. There is one minor void in the timber, however the CA took care of that. I did the bulk of the work last night and decided to finish it up this morning. I discover this morning that a few bugs had landed on it overnight and got stuck in the CA. So I sanded a couple of layers off and re-finished it.
Unfortunatley when it came time for assembly, somehow I screwed up the mechanism. It works great as a pen and feels comfortable in the hand. Though the nib won't recede inside the body. Oh well, I'll try to work it out on the next one.
Cheers
Rhys

That s a pretty fair first up effort Rhys, just watch the sun when taking photos outside.
BTW dont give that pen away that is the one that you must keep for your self as something to look at in years to come and say to yourself "boy I've come a long way since I turned this".Regards Rumnut.

Great first effort burls are always a bit of a challenge ,and CA is one of the "dark arts " as well what has most likely happened is you have simply pressed the activater in a little too far ,what I do is a mock up pre assembly ,insert the refill into the mechanism and wind it fully extended ,lay it beside your blank and lay the nib at the front of the blank up to the nib shoulder ,this will let you see how far you need to press the mechanism in to get the right length. You can mark it with a fine textra or similar to indicate how far to press it in . It is possible to disassemble the pen with a set of transfer punches and knock the activater back slightly, But at this point its a learning process so not really worth taking a chance on it Hope that makes sense to you , Cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

Nice first pen looks like a normal slim type if you look at the turning mec thats the part the refill goes in there is a indented ring push it into the pen barrel to just before this then check the workings it is normal for this mark to be level with the barrel .

Thanks for the responses guys. I figured I put it in too far. Hopefully I'll have time to have another bash at it tomorrow.
Cheers
Rhys.

Nice one first up.
My very scientific method for not "over doing it" when assembling is to do it bit by bit.
I use my wood work vice for assembly and test fit the refill and see how far it protrudes and adjust from there.

If you are keeping the pen a fix is to take the plastic cap off the refill, shorten the refill as necessary (a junior hacksaw works) put the plastic cap back on and bingo.
