    Default A special batch

Here's a few pens which I finished off today along with a special one for a retired Naval Officer.

    From left to right:
    Fiddleback Blackwood on Chrome
    Buloke on Gold
    Blackheart Sassafras on Gun Metal
Ringed Gidgee & brass on Gun Metal

The brass rings on the Ringed Gidgee one represent the rank which the recipient used to wear.

Thanks team, I'm pretty happy with this batch. The figure in the Blackwood & Sassy is amazing (pity the photo doesn't show the Sassy as well). The rings in the Gidgee aren't as pronounced but they are there and I like how the rank came up in the finished pen. It took a couple of goes to get that one right and I think there's still some work to do in getting it just right but this one's a keeper

Nice work Corbs, how did you do the brass rings noting the discussion on this topic at work recently?

I had a try with brass washers (see attached pic) but the lines between the washers showed through. This was probably more a result of my lack of flattening the washers before gluing than the washers themselves.

On the final product I used some flat brass bar from a local hobby shop. I filed each piece flat on both sides so they mated up neatly. You can still see the lines a little but I'm much happier with the second version. I did manage to file through the tip of my finger flattening the brass pieces as well . I still think there's a better way of doing it but I don't think I will be making too many of these so I've got time to think about that now .
