Freight costs, especially for small quantities, prevent me from using overseas suppliers most of the time so I generally shop locally. Timberbits have a good range, Gary Pye has a smaller range and McJing has only three or four kits. But if "best" is determined by service, I would call it a dead heat between the three as they have all provided excellent service and really quick despatch times. I have not used other Australian suppliers (yet) as these three have met almost all of my requirements. The exception was for my Baseball Bat kits, not available in Australia, and they were sourced from Rizheng in China - again, excellent service but the small quantity made the freight a bit pricey. Still cheaper than flying there to pick them up!

ps: I have no connection with any of the above suppliers, other than as a happy customer.

Also no affiliation, and am happy with all 3, not in any specific order. All are brilliant service providers.

    Hi All,

As a relatively new supplier of pen kits (steveswoodcraft), I will not answer the question, but I am interested to read peoples response. I would like to know what is lacking from Australian Suppliers, or why people are buying offshore, is it range, price, service, etc.

    Cheers
    Steve

I think range and quality is an issue here in Aus. I don’t buy as many bits as I used to, but when I was selling quite a few pens, I would have to do an order from 3-4 suppliers each fortnight or so, to get the range of stuff I was selling. For example, one supplier sold a good quality Cigar kit, but I didn’t like their Sierras, so if I needed both, I would have to do two separate orders and pay two freights, so I would always pad up the orders with extras that I didn’t really need to make the freight worthwhile.
For pens I am selling, I definitely steer clear of the cheaper varieties, well I don’t mind cheap, but the quality has to be there.

I have done a few buys from over in the USA to get a better variety of stuff, the freight is a bit of a killer these days so haven’t done one for a while. In fact I probably haven’t had to buy any kits for the last 6 months or more, I haven’t been selling pens, so I have been just using up what I have stashed in drawers. My range is getting pretty limited now though.

I did some pens for a wedding on the weekend, I was approached by the photographer about doing more, we are discussing styles etc, but I had a look online and some of my usual kits are out of stock, so am looking at alternatives. And then I have the problem of finding a nice pen box in a hurry.
    Brad.
