Default Timber blank ID - beefwood?

    Hi folks,

Turned some unlabelled blanks this week - and I am hoping someone can help with a timber ID (although I know it's not easy from photos!) - my best guess is they might be beefwood. Moderately heavy, not all that hard (by australian standards!), and I think I got the blank from Mapleman, so the tree would presumably have been in SE QLD:

    Anyone have any theories?

    Cheers,

    Danny

Having used beefwood and made pens from beefwood, I don't think this is beefwood.

How about taking another picture so we can see the timber, rather than the clip

Agree with Neil, very difficult to see any key features of the timber in the supplied photos, but enough to say its definitely not Beefwood.

Good point, I didn't really pay enough attention to the photos for this purpose!

Here's another - taking close ups is a bit horrifying, I can see issues with the finish!

The yellow 'flecks' in the grain appeared under the lacquer finish. Not sure what is going on there, but I didn't actually mind the look so didn't strip back and try to fix.

    Thanks,

    Danny

Yeh not Beefwood. Not sure but Kwilla is a brown and has yellow flake like that

I hadn't considered kwila for some reason, but now that you mention it, I think that's probably right!

Thanks folks - especially Neil for the kwila suggestion.

    Cheers,

    Danny

Yep, kwila is a prime suspect. Don't try to remove the flecks.... futile. They will be all through it most likely. Also, this timber will stain things around it if it gets wet, so I would suggest sealing well on all surfaces... not that you would swim with a pen in your pocket, but things happen, like washing machines!

edit to add that I believe the yellow flecks are sulphur based.

My first thoughts were Kwila but not certain with the orig photos. Kwilia is a prime suspect but then there are quite a few other possibilities.

Yeah, 'probably kwila' is a good enough ID for me! Could well be something else I guess but I am guessing it's pretty low probability given how much kwila there is around.

I was going to say Merbau but I see that is just another name for Kwila here.

Also known as Vesi in Fiji. It also varies in colour from yellowy brown, red brown through to an almost dark chocolate brown
