What finish are you using? just that it looks a little dull.

Process I've been using is:

400 grade paper dry
400 grade slurry with danish oil
500 grade, dry and slurry
800 grade, dry and slurry
1000 grade, dry and slurry
cutting compound
Shellawax

They seem to come up well, but not high gloss
Some come up very flat...particularly the boganvillia....nothing I do can bring up a shine in something so soft.
It seems the harder the wood, the better the shine, although my very ordinary photography skills don't bring up much of the lustre...

Any advice is appreciated!

Your finish is excellent, love your pens.

You asked for suggestions I have one using your Slimlines buy Streamline centre bands cheap as chips from Timberbits or anyone who sells them separately in differing colours and have fun with other shapes. My method allows me a fatter pen and room to experiment.

Taking finishes too far was the pour on total gloss on show at the WWW Show here last weekend and seeing your finishing was like a breath of fresh air.

There are two groups of people those who give advice and those who choose not to for whatever reason both are right in some circumstances, by that I try to uplift personally keeping any predudices out of discussion and seek to be objective. The glass is always at least half full for me. Sometimes it overflows.

The use of various timbers will give you insides to their characteristics and unbelievable range of grain. Have fun I do.

I like paying homage to the wood, and staying as close to what it can produce naturally as a lustre....not that I'm adverse to trying a gloss finish, but it does seem a little like glazing.

My daily beaters are a slimline pen and mech pencil in Jarrah, which have gone very dark from absorbing the oils from my fingers, but have a brilliant character as a result....I've been using them for 2 years, and love them

Any ideas on experimenting with finishes, I'm keen to hear....always interested in learning what everyone else does!

I use to use Shellawax and still do for cheap bulk orders but I found as you have that the pen turns very dark from use so now I use CA but it is at a compromise of the feel of natural timber.
Whatever you use is fine as long as you have fun doing it

CA?.....what's CA?

Yep..typical newbie question! :P

CA is supper glue. Why call it CA? it is abbreviated from the chemical name witch I have no idea how to spell.
If you see CA/BLO as a finish that is super glue and boiled linseed oil and that is my favourite finish.

Cyanoacrylate, I think is the spelling but its easier to say CA or simply Super glue.

Is BLO something you can buy off the shelf? How is this applied with the CA?

BLO is short for Burnt Linseed Oil ,readily available at most big hardware stores ,bunnings and mitre 10 come to mind .I think there are some videos around to describe and demonstrate the methods , like most things you see how others do things then adapt to what you find best for you . Cheers ~ John
