Waddy wood
Recently I stood in at The Royal Canberra Show for the Canberra Lapidary Group as Information person sitting alongside a guy called John an expert Faceter who showed me how he facets Gems etc.His travels take him to where this timber AKA ACACIA PEUCE.
It takes 30 years to grow 3 feet tall from the ground, resembles a Pine Tree during its growth cycle and can live up to 500 yrs. In the young stages it has spikes etc for protection in the desert from Rats,Possums, Kangaroos and Emus,Rabbits etc.
He John has a mine up north in Queensland and spends a few months in the heat while we freeze here in the winter time.
In another life he was a rouseabout on properties around and near Waddy Wood,in fact he used to drive 200 km every now and again extra just to see the trees. I copied a photograph enclosed here of an adult tree with different aged ones beside and near.I treasure my few pieces of Waddy Wood and in my collection I had this Pen made from it that I had cut 11 facets in the top. The colours in the timber range from plain to delerious, into the purples, reds, oranges. Unlike other trees the colours remain fast. The trees are highly protected now.
Pictured a while back now is a pen made from the Acacia Peuce,he Jon loves his new pen.

A fitting pen for such a person, thanks for the story and photos Peter.
I have a single pen blank of this stuff stashed somewhere, will have to keep an eye out for it.
I didn’t know what the tree looked like before I saw your photo, I reckon I have driven past quite a few of those over the years.Brad.

No Nrb, far from it. Its an inland (desert Acacia). Its bark is rough but not as deeply furrowed or dark as Vic ironbark. Not a commercial species either probably endangered now.
For more info I've just posted info in the Timber Forum section
