    Default Where was the warning!!!!!

Over the weekend I had to go to Jim Carrolls to get some sand papar discs and decided that I was going to buy the starter pen turning kit. No drama's with that but I really really feel quite strongly that there was an addiction warning missing from the bits and pieces I took home.

I was back on monday getting more blanks and parts and I have now finished off 6. Probably not the best pens in the world but I am happy with them. I have done 3 purple heart, one huon pine, one woody pear and one flaming sheoak. (right to left in pic)

One question however, does it mean I am not glueing the tubes in well enough if with a couple of the wood blanks have split and a piece has fallen off???

Rowan you should be proud of your first pens, make sure you keep your first and look back where you started and to where you have progressed. With gluing it is what you prefer, I prefer CA others a 2 pack glue. But one thing I do when I drill a blank, I coat the hole with CA, this gives your bonding glue something to key to as well as if there are any internal cracks the CA should work into them. When dry clean the hole out with the drill that you used for the hole, this will allow the tube to fit. With the brass tubes, rough them up with some rough sand paper, this again will create a key for the glue to stick to. You can seal the tubes with a piece of potato coat the inside of the hole, coat the tube and when inserting the tube I generally twist it as it goes in. I have use both 2 pack and CA using this method and never have had a blank fail. If you use CA, for the final gluing of tubes I use medium CA. Hope this is of help.

    Short'n'simple answer: yes.

There's more to it, of course, but that's the most common cause.

Nice start! So, are you going to join the September pen swap? I can guarantee it'd be an educational experience...

I think that this is correct. I have been using poyurethane glue (aquadhere brand ?sp). It doesn't have to be mixed up like the 2 packs and it foams as it sets filling in any voids. It dries overnight which is OK by me and I haven't had any breakages yet. I think using CA is a bit more tricky.

    • How do you find the cost of it versus CA?
    • Do you have to plug the ends of the tubes?
    • Is it messy to apply?

I have only purchased 1 bottle and it was about $20 but it is a 200ml bottle. I have probably only used 20ml out of the bottle yet. I don't know if you can get smaller bottles but this would be better.
I haven't plugged the end if the tubes and any glue seems not to go down the tube but has covered the end. This was easily removed with the reamer.
It is messy and I wear disposable gloves (that I liberated from work). i have got some on the outside of the blanks but this turns off with no hassles.

Just a caution - that stuff goes bad really quickly, due to moisture pickup. It is great for furniture projects and so on, but the leftovers never stay around long ( a couple of months). I advise getting the smallest bottles you can find.
