Wedding Pens
This has been one traumatic experience for me, finally I have had to settle for what you see, I botched the Ebony 4 times, each time I recut another piece of ebony and restarted and still I have failed; my CA finish just would not take and if it did I would end up wrecking the final wet sanding! The ebony you see is the last attempt as time is running out, I need to get interstate for the wedding. Thanks to those who gave sound advice (Al and Sam) in regards to finishing, sorry Sam, my time was running out and I botched the WOP also!!!
Meanwhile, here they are, Both Jnr. Emperors. AmosGood, better, best, never let it rest;
Til your good is better, and your
better, best.

You are too hard on yourself, Amos. I think they turned out wonderfully! Sure to be appreciated and treasured.

The maker is always the harshest critic! They look great! The Bride and Groom should be very very happy with them! I can't pick a fault with them.
How did you do the engraving, if I can ask?
Great pens!
Nathan.

You are certainly not going to get any criticism on that pair In researching ebony finishes I came across an article from a musical instrument maker , and his secret was "toothpaste " as a polishing agent ,not sure if thats any use, I usually get as smooth as possible then buff them ,gets a nice satin polish ,but not a highly shiny finish some like to produce. I suspect the ebony may be slightly oily but not sure on that ? but all up a beautiful set, for I am sure a lovely pair cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

Put that cat o nine tails in the bin, I love your pens. By the way if you can buy African Blackwood use that next time it turns well and finishes real well, has a little brown in it from time to time. Never could figure why the groom is in black in the old days to get detail in the white gowns and detail in the black suit was a continual impossibility photographically always a compromise.
The African Blackwood with the 1/2 sapwood top I showed recently was sanded fine then triple eee polish by two then cream polish by one then stick wax and lately I have been buffing by twice with a light bit of wax stick on the 50mm buff. Using a small buffing wheel gives control to prevent losing the pen blank against the wall.
Enjoy the wedding if you are family or friend or if it is for a job remove your thoughts and accept ours they are pens to be proud of, sometimes trying too hard is unneccessary best keep it simple.
Take care my friend, all the best to you and yours Peter,

Amos my friend
We are all our own worse critics and are always blind to the obvious. As the song says they are living in perfect harmony, side by side. The obvious thing here is that you have made a beautiful pair of wedding pens. Yes the Ebony may have been a beast to finish but you got there in the end. I am far from wise but I think this quote can sum up pen crafting at times, just my thoughts though when I read it, others may differ.
Life is described in one of four ways: a journey, a battle, a pilgrimage, or a race. Select your own metaphors, but the necessity of finishing is all the same. For if life is a journey, it must be completed. If life is a battle, it must be finished. If life is a pilgrimage, it must be concluded. And if life is a race, it must be won.
Amos you have created something of beauty and sheer elegance, your craftsmanship is always of the highest standards and are a pen crafter that many people look up to and aspire to be as good as you. You have done well with your work, don't be too hard on yourself my friend.
Take care
Darren

Great looking set of pens.
3rd May - You have plenty of time still up your sleeves. Express post satchel on Thursday which means you have all of Wednesday and Thursday! If your driving up, then you can put the lathe in the back of the car!
Quick question. When you laser engrave the timber, does the laser burn up to brass tube only? or does it go all the way through?
Peter - I only found out recently that wedding cars use to be black as well!
Thanks for sharing.

Great looking pens Amos, real class
As said above, we tend to be our own worst critics and it can be a real pain. However, if we weren't, we would never improve, so look at this as another learning experience,, as they all are. Each pen we make we learn a little more.
As one of the best pen turners I know says in his signature:
Good, better, best, never let it rest;
Til your good is better, and your
better, best.
Hope you have a great time at the wedding
