    Default this weekend

So i dragged the missus out and went up to see Mr Mapleman this weekend, knowing prior that a lot of his shedded stock had been sold (i wanted to see it before it left for its new home) , still i drove away with a LOT of stuff, a bootfull in my commodore.

Well worth the time and money spent for me, a relativly low volume buy in the sceme of things. I even saved a few bits from his "to be burned" woodpile. Got a wider variety of woods than i thought, and met two lovely folks and their logdogs and had a great drive to and from.

The wood is still all packed into the boot of the car and too late now to unload or picture (will do that tomorrow), some very nice stuff, crows ash slabs, a few blocks of northern and southern silky oak, some forrest redgum, some blackwood and of course maple.

Very happy i made the trip, and bits kept appearing in the boot while the logdogs and conversation distracted me.

To keep this pen related, the discussion turned to a pen kit the lady had bought about 6 years ago and hadn't gotten around to getting it made up so i offered to have a go and showed them some pics of my work. Its an old sierra mostly there, and i have a special bit of very figured maple to make it complete and add another to it for them both.

Will add a barrage of pics tomorrow, just wanted to share the experience, and say thanks for a lovely day.

    Neal.

Sounds like success Neal and a good day as well. I ended up trying to get bits and pieces for the pressure pot but didn't have a lot of success and then to the shed to drill a blank for a Traditional fountain pen for a guy at work and mess around getting the setting right on the new band saw.

I'll be interested to see the photos when you post them

I got sick and tired of the other one throwing sparks (I think it was worn out) so I got a bigger version of the Ryobi. It has taken a while to set it up to get the blade to cut straight but it's now working well.

    4. maple planks, incredibly figured.
    5. pen blanked sticks, left to right (i think) forrest redgum, blackwood, maple and northern silky oak, again all very figured.
    6. slabs of crows ash (these were on his to burn pile...).

and a few other small bits that somehow found their way into the boot, i may not have the best eye for timber or know exactly what i'm looking at by name and species, i'm not experienced enough yet, but i know most of the striking features in roughsawn and how they'll turn, and this stuff is stunning, i cant wait to get some lathe time.

Gee Neal, love that Fig Blackwood & Maple.. I searched everywhere a few weekends ago for some Maple with a bit of figure in it, but could only find some average stuff. I had to make a ships clock & barometer wall mounted hutch for a customer, I also made her a couple of Maple pens out of the same bit of wood as the hutch (forgot to take a pic of the pens
Anyway, good score mate. Wish I had a Mapleman up here

Pariss. You have many hidden talents you have not told us about. The timberwork in the barometers and ship's clock is brilliant but must have taken a while to make.
