    Default WIP ... Jim Beam

*** WARNING THIS IS A STEP BY STEP EXPERIMENT ***
it may not turn out as envisioned ... it may not turn out AT ALL, one can only try

    Step 1
Gather Ingredients - just like making scones Hmmm
    DSCN6602.JPG
    Step 2
i cut the blank into 4 pieces, i will try and keep the Charcoal edge
I have also dealt with the bottle top, you can see its now flat
    DSCN6604.JPG
    Step 3

before drilling, i gave the charcoal a good coat of Clear Enamel Spray, to strengthen the Charcoal
i did try to reverse drill one piece which failed, so they were drilled from the charcoal side, in the lathe
    DSCN6605.JPG
    Step 4
    Dress up the Tube
    DSCN6606.JPG
    Step 5
Bend the Bottle Top to suit the Tube
    DSCN6607.JPG
    Step 6
the bottle top is now Centeredish and glued in place
    DSCN6608.JPG
    Step 7
Glue the Blocks onto the Ends
i have also now given the charcoal finish a good dose of CA which should stop it chipping away in the next step
    DSCN6609.JPG

Stay Tuned for the next exciting (well maybe not) episode of CAST THAT BLANK!!!

on a side note, has anyone here ever tried Stabilizing a JB or JD blank with the charcoal still on, does the charcoal stay or disappear???

    Step 8
    Turn down to size
the blank is now turned down to fit into the mold for casting
due to the wood not being stabilized i have also put a couple of coats of CA on the turned surface to stop any pesky bubbles from coming out in the wrong places
now we have to wait 24 hours for the CA to go off completely before casting, then another 24 hours for the resin to set ... i hate this bit

You have to experiment if you want to grow your skills.

I have never tried casting but the CA should stabilise the charcoal layer and help keep it in place.

I am watching to see how this turns out.

MIK, when you said step by step---I thought you would be seen with a full glass in 1st step, 3/4 glass next step, 1/2 glass and so on, and along each picture would be a straight cut, a sort of straight cut, a scraggly cut, and an off cut and----. Amos

    Failed!!!

Nearly down to finished size and the one end BLEW APART!!!
i probably should have stopped and checked for cracks .. we live and learn
i gave it a few coats of CA to see what it would have looked liked
i think it has merit and will try again in the near future
i definitely like the charcoal attached and now that i think about it i should have used Copper tape to represent a Still

now i need to find another bottle top
