Thread: WOP

I have been using it for a while now and its good, takes a while to dry and sometimes the rain (humidity) will cause wrinkling. So far I have been very impressed with it as a finish.

Oddly enough I just asked Les Elms in Canada about the MixWax he is using. He uses Clear Gloss Water based Oil Modified Polyurethane. The WOP is good but it does take time t dry. The OMP alternative dries in a bit over an hour. I am looking for a new finish (separate post).

However, I don't know why you would want to put a sealant like this over resin. My thoughts are that unless you put a lost of coats on it will wear off easily. You also run the risk of creating ripple on the finish and attracting dust to the drying coats. I have only ever used sandpaper to 600 grit, then MM (wet) on resin and then polished it with Carnauba wax on the lathe running at 3000rpm to ensure its heats as the wax seals it. Come up like glass.

Greg, the reason for this question is that I am about to make 30 pens for a high school 50th anniversary and I want the best possible finish because I will be putting deals on the pens.

I have never had consistent results with CA and thought this might be an option.

Perhaps a thin coat of clear resin over the decal will be a better idea?

Sorry, I didn't realise decals were involved. Not sure about the extra coat of resin as it will get very hot when drying and might affect the decals. When I use CA over decals, I always spray the decal with acrylic clear top coat a couple of times first to stop the heat from the CA distorting the colours in the decals. Ian (Dorno) at Hunter Valley pens makes a lot of resin pens with decals. Send him an email and he will be happy to help you out. Hope this helps.

Ray works well on decals and resin as said by Sturdee it is available at Masters along with many other Minwax products, once Masters took it up Bunnies dropped. It works the other way as well. I am lucky I have the big green shed and the big blue shed handy

Bunnies dropped at the Nerang Qld store before Masters opened due to short shelf life. When Masters opened their Nerang store our club was there dong demos. They asked us to review their supplies from a woodworking perspective. At the time there was no WOP there and I commented that this was a very popular product that was dropped by Bunnies due to problems with shelf life. The next week Masters stocked it, along with all the products we had suggested, I was very impressed. They suggested they store chisels and chucks etc but we advised this was very specialised and they would only be providing the cheap chinese stuff that we would not be interested in and it would be probably uneconomical for them to provide the good stuff. That store still provides really good service, shame some of their other branches do not provide the same. I consider our Bunnies provides good service too (although they do comply with store policies when it comes to available product lines) so perhaps it is just Nerang and I am lucky.

I went to Masters at Parkinson to get some MinWax water based oil modified poly. The staff fell over themselves to help. They are certainly a friendlier crew than Bunnings and its easy to get assistance without having to walk up and down aisles looking for a staff member only to find them disappear in the other direction.

Masters have a full range of the MinWax products. Well done Neal if you organised this.
