    Default Box Joint router bits

Hi all, I bought the 6 piece set of Whiteside metric bits produced specifically for the Incra Jig. The 10 mm straight bit is actually measures 10.1 mm and the resultant joints are very loose. I need to find a 1/2" shank 10 mm bit that is exactly 10 mm or slightly undersize but definitely not oversize.

Have any other Incra owners found a suitable bit for 10 mm box joints. I'd like to know what brand and or the part number if possible. I live in a country town so browsing for bits is not an option.

    Steve

    Couple of suggestions,

First off, have you tried to contact either Whiteside or your supplier about replacing the faulty component?

Secondly, any decent saw doctors close by, a good one should be able to 'sharpen' the bit to size since it is starting out oversize?

Carb i Tool have a 12.7 shank 10mm dia x 25mm cut length carbide tipped 2 flute straight bit as T1410 M in their catalogue. The cat and price list are available on line and they have a number of dealers around Oz. They also have 10mm solid carbide spirals, but the drawings with them suggest that the shank is the same size as the cutting width and they to be commercial CNC cutters.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

Hi malb, Thanks for your suggestions. I'm awaiting a reply from the manufacturer and hopefully they will replace the bit. Unfortunately there are no longer any good saw doctors in my area that I know of and it would mean sending to Brisbane. I have a small job to do that has a time limit so buying a replacement is ok with me. You can't have too many bits anyway. As there are limited suppliers around here, I want to make sure a replacement bit is the correct size before I buy. I don't want to rely on a tool salesmans word that it is 10 mm been there done that. If someone here has a 10 mm bit that they have used and is known to be good then that will help me limit the choice. Otherwise I'm buying blind and I'd like to avoid that.

One thing I have found since this issue came to light is that after measuring all the bits I have, there is a lot of variance on the actual width of bits from manufacturer to manufacturer. I have a good collection of milling bits that I measured also and every bit I had was almost exactly the size represented. I'm not sure why that is. One theory is that router bit manufacturers often make bits specific to a task like slotting for a 6 mm sheet to fit into and the bits are like 6.3 mm for a sliding fit and that makes sense.
