    Default Incra Fence for Mitre saw Bench

    I want to use the Incra system on my mitre saw bench but can't justify the price for a full length fence as it works out to about $600. I looked at the telescoping fence as an alternative but from what I can gleen on the net and PWS are not open at the moment. My question concerns the telescoping part, it appears to slide without any positive stops and if that is the case then that negates the whole concept if the telescoping stop is in use. Have I got this right?

    My other alternative is adapt a Wixey to the saw which I think can be easily done and use a leading spacer to bridge the gap between the start of the Wixey and the blade to set the Wixey to zero. I have had a Wixey on my TS since they came out and find it very repeatable but I think the Incra is better but maybe not worth the trouble. Comments and ideas gladly received.

    Default Mitre Saw Fence Solutions

    Hi Chris

    There are a few options, as is usual with woodworking;
    1. Use the Incra Track System as seen HERE this lets you have a stop that can be positioned at exactly 1.0mm increments, using Incra's Shop Stop
    2. Use the Incra Flip Fence (non-telescoping), this is the same extrusion as the telescopic version and utilises the Incra Flip Shop Stop, this is a little more versatile. The interlocking fingers on the Stop and Fence give you a perfect stop even when cutting sharply mitred work pieces. And of course, INCRA's patented rack system is fully integrated in the fence. This is a bit long-winded but shows the concept all these are now supplied in Full Metric with or without the Telescoping feature...

    Both these are available on special order in 450 / 915/ 1320 lengths.

    call me if you need any further info.

    Regards

    Grahame

    There's also the Kreg system which looks ok. I think I would still go with the Incra though. The repeatability is a big plus.

    Have you thought about making your own incremental system using a length of threaded rod?
    Those were the droids I was looking for.

    Tony, I have the Kreg system already but it hasn't got the repeatability of the Incra or Wixey. Fast cap do an interesting version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by6aKDwNo7Y but as with most fences it is as accurate as your eye. I spoke to My Wixey a few years ago on the phone and asked him why they did not do a mitre saw version and at the time he told me that they had not figured out how. It really is not that hard using a filler such as Fastcap do to bridge the gap between the tape and the DRO head. Put a metal end cap on the piece of timber used and the DRO head will stick to it and act the same as on a TS fence. The filler piece runs over a T track and has a screw through it that runs on the track. The Incra is less trouble and has a flip stop making it possible to use more than one stop for multiple operations.

    I found with the Kreg that it is susceptible to sideways deflection because the stop is effectively cantilevered on one end of the bolt. I got hold of another set of Flip stops courtesy of Kreg and Put one of the sliding/lockable heads one each end of the bolt to stop it moving and it is now rock solid. Apparently Kreg modified the flipstop to overcome this problem but it is still not perfect and if the bolt holding the flipstop is not fairly tight movement is fairly noticeable and making it that tight makes it fairly stiff to move. I will post pics of it when I have got all the parts machined and fitted.

    All this comes from having a bee in my bonnet concerning having all the fences on my machines cutting to exactly the same length at any given measurement. We all go on about using the same tape measure but how many of us get all the fences cut to the exact same measurement?
