chrom, check out the books & mags at bunnings, they usually have a few magazines and yearbooks with heaps of period renovator type suppliers and such advertising in them, could be the go.

If you are near Osbourne Park there is a great place for all federation supplies called Subiaco Restorations. Cant remember the address but they have plenty of posts and make up what you need on site..

Usually the OEM has a "Store Locator" or "Distributor Locator" on their web sie. You may want to try that link. Also, a quick e-mail to the contact us mail box with a query 'I want to buy' usally gets a quick response.

Demo yards often have a few, i picked up a couple a few years back to use as table legs.

Went to the Subi Fed shop and drooled over the supplies...Great shop..Verandah posts were cheaper then bunnings. Most stuff was really reasonably priced.

In comparison you can buy cast iron fireplace inserts from Subi from 350. Similar one I looked at from a bayswater salvage yard which was very basic and in ok nic for 900

I brought one of those inserts there and am in the process of installing it. It certainly is one shop where you could spend a few dollars

I would be interested in checking out how you install your insert.

I have a wood mantle that's been sitting against the wall for several months that I havnt bothered to tackle yet.

I am just going to use dynabolts into the bricks for the insert. With the mantle they have special brackets that the mantle slips into and it clamps it to the fireplace. Trouble was I forgot to get them when I was last in Perth so thats another project on the backburner until I head down next.
Will post photos shortly of the insert though..

How do the male fittings of the brackets fix to the mantle.....?

I've asked heaps of people this question and had heaps of different answers so to find out about the brackets really helps...

I was told that you have to get the height right so that the bracket on the mantle slides onto the wall bracket and the weight will ensure it stays tight to the wall.
The wall bracket is shaped like a v only with a straight edge to the wall. The mantle bracket slides over it so you dont need to place any fittings at the front where they will be visible.

Hopefully will be in Perth this weekend so will get them and post a photo
