I have been involved with a couple of these threads.
Everyone is talking about MGP graded pine. I just thought I would mention that our old house uses three inch by one inch hardwood battens, and this was the green timber size so a lot of shrinkage has occurred over 60 years So I can only assume these are the structural equivalent of the new sizes.
They no measure approximately 65-70mm X 20-22mm and are probably F11 or thereabouts, the same timber size used for inset diagonal bracing in these old houses

My question is this:> If the new building regulations are a performance based standard why is the old practice of ripping a 90*45 to give a 45*45 batten not allowed?
You can still skew nail a 45*45 with 2 nails for hold down purposes and the 45mm depth is more than strong enough for the 600mm distance between rafters
