Roof Clean and re-point

Hi All

What I need is to have about half of my roof cleaned and re-pointed. TerraCotta Tiles

The other halve I cleaned all tiles before I put them up on the new extension that Ive been doing for the last couple of years.
So Ive got half the roof looking nice and new, and the other half with 50 years of moss etc on it. and the ridge capping needing resetting / re-pointing

I have all heard the stories about the big company's and the prices they charge and I seem to believe that, as I had one of them come out a couple years ago and realized once the salesman was interested in his commission and stopped listening to what I wanted he lasted about two minutes till I told him were to go.

So if there is anyone out there that can recommend someone to clean and re-point my terracotta tiles in western Sydney that does a good job at a reasonable price ?

The other alternative would be that I might get up there

and do it when the weather cools down. any tips on doing this ?

If you do it yourself use a tub of the premixed acrylic-based pointing compound, not mortar. Rake out the loose bits and trowel on the pointing compound. Be safe on the roof!!

Cleaning is not hard to do, normally you would use a high pressure water hose like a Karcher, but under current water restrictions ( at least in Melbourne ) you must use your own recycled water not tap water.

That makes it a little difficult to do it yourself.

Hi mic-d yes I used the pointing compound when I did the extension but the older part of the roof really needs to be reset all together as the ridge capping etc is all loose and out of place.
"Be safe on the roof " thats the easy part its just the 4 or so metres to the ground thats the problem

Hi Sturdee yep here in sydney we have water restrictions as well may put a tank in soon. But I guess it would still have to rain to fill it

Used a high pressure cleaner and chlorine to clean the tiles on the extension, the good thing was I cleaned all 1200 before I put them up on the roof.

Just wondering how slippery it would be on the roof to do it ?

When I had my roof done, which included sealing and painting, the contractor walked up and down the roof and did the section beside him on his right hand side so that he always walked on the untreated section of the roof apart from the last little bit.

My roof is double story in part and steep with many sides so I got it done by a professional. If anyone was going to break their back by falling of it wasn't going to be me but your roof seems simple enough. Even so make sure that you protect yourself with either scaffolding and/or with a safety rope.
