Default Down lights and false ceilings!!

    Hi there,

I'm having a false ceiling (to cover a vermiculite ceiling) put in and had an electrician say to leave a minimum of 110mm ceiling void. The installer of the false ceiling has only left 80mm before the plaster goes on.

I had a look at some websites and found a thorn electronic transformer 60W that only requires 60mm ceiling void.

I have measrued the globes and there will probably be about 20 to 30mm above the wires to the existing vermiculite ceiling. The rooms are quite large but I am a bit worried about heat build up.

Just wondering if anyone has had expereince fitting the 50W low voltage downlights in areas of small voids.

Will be a huge job for him to adjust the height as all the aluminium channels have been put in and levelled

    Any ideas.

I know the transformer should be mounted 20mm atleast away from the globe

    Thanks

    Gazza

I had some installed where we have pine linings under a vaulted colourbond roof. The cavity was packed with insualtion and so small that they didn't think theyd fit the lights in. The end of the light was just about touching the underside of the roof. We got them in and put the transformers in a separate area, where we had a false roof over the pantry. Because of the distance that the transformer was away from the light, they used some type of thicker power leads made for just that purpose. We have no problems with the globes overheating or blowing and it's been 18 months since they went in. If you have an area like ours, not too far away where the transformers could go, that would be a possible solution. Maybe the top of a cupboard or something similar.
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Thanks Gumby for the quick reply - that's good to know. There wont really be anywhere else to mount the transformers but If I keep them well away from the globes I think it may be ok.

Anyone else also had similar experiences?

    Cheers
