Default Cavity Wall Insulation - Melbourne area

I am considering retrofit wall cavity insulation for a weatherboard house. I have recently moved in and the internal walls & external boards are in good condition - pulling eith of them off to get to the cavity is not really an option therefore.

Can anyone recommend a contractor for blown cavity wall insulation in the Melbourne area.

Also, any views on which material - chemical foam, rock wool, etc is better?

    thanks

    Default cavity wall insulation

    napoleon,

I followed Lozza's advice and called the mob in Sydney. They aren't yet set up in Melbourne but hope to be by end Nov 07. They gave me a quote which I thought wasn't too bad and I am going to talk to them again once they are set up.

    I have two issues:

    1. There are two ways to inject the foam in each timber frame i) to drill holes using a hole saw or ii) to pull off two weather boards on each wall (at the top of each wall half - the wall is divided in half by noggins). I am concerned by the amount of damage that will be caused and how much effort to re-instate. Refitting, repainting etc was in the quote.

    Any thoughts on this?

    2. I think most of the wall already has glass batts. If you look at the video on the retrofoam website it shows the foam compressing the batts slightly but, the foam gets into all the corners. The complete fill is the key I think. If I can pull a weatherboard off I am hoping that I can pull most of the batts out. That would be a winner as I will use them to double insulate the loft and a bit of damage wouldn;t matter.

In general, I am OK with the idea of pumping foam into the walls. I used to live in the UK and it is very common there. My parents did it and it was very effective. That was in a house with double brick construction. I think it will be even more noticeable in a weatherboard house.

I would call them up and get a quote at least. That could make your mind up straight away. Next for my house is to insulate under the floor. I am intending to get under the house and put poly batts between the joists and cover over with board.

Let us know what you decide.
