    Question Interior and Exterior Paints

    Hi all,

Long time visitor .... first time poster, so please be kind

I would like to know the difference between interior and exterior water based paints.

I have some projects on the go at the moment and in order to keep costs down I would like to use interior water based paints even though the items will be stored externally. Now I am not expecting these items to maintain great looks for the next 20 years but I would like at least 3 I think. The items are made from exterior grade 9mm and 6mm ply.

    So the question is .....
What makes exterior paints suitable to exterior use?
How well will internal paints hold up externally?

I recall when I was a youngster painting a backboard for my basketball ring on a brick wall at my parents house .... for this I used interior ceiling paint and after 10+ years it is still in good condition.

    Hi,

I'm not a paint expert, but I do know that exterior paint has UV stabilisers in it and that interior paint will not last as long outside in the weather. I used some interior paint on the kid's cubby a few years ago and now I have to re-do those bits.

The difference is getting more & more confusing as paint technology changes.

It all used to be cut & dried.

The cieling paint & am currently using (very nice) is designed to be indoor /out door and function as a primer.

Its a solver commercial product, I can understand the philisophy.

"just stik a drum of this in the airless & keep spraying mate"

I'd ask at a decent paint shop.

Most paint in "commercial quantities" is arround $10 a litre give or take often a bit more. an large amount more in smaller tins.

I had a fit the othe day when I saw a 1L of enamel in a chain store for almost $30.
