Light fixture in fibrous plaster
Hi,
I've recently bought a two-storey 1930's house with (what appears to be) fibrous plaster ceilings. I'd like to replace a downstairs light fitting but I'm not sure about the load-bearing capability of the material.
It initially appeared that the ceiling had obvious beams which I assumed were painted so I bought quite a heavy light fitting. On closer inspection these seem to be moulded fibrous plaster rather than solid wood beams.
Is it likely the actual beams are lurking deep beneath these "fake" plaster beams? Otherwise how can I locate the beams and hang my new light fitting? Would this plaster take the load of my fixture (maybe 5kg) if I used plasterboard wall mates or similar?
I have virtually no experience in home renovation; any advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers
AOT
