    DJ,

What about tying that big dog to that yellowbox burl!!!

Unless some thief is superman, that VL300 aint a goin' nowhere. Not past the alarms either.

We're down at Healesville, should be there by 9ish. What say I go past the bakery and collect some bread etc? Don't want to double up again though. I think we over-catered last time.

Really looking forward to it. Ern has some new tools for me (mind you, he didn't offer me the gouge pre-auction either.) And lots of "problems" to be solved. Plus DJ on that burl, on at least one super-hard, KD redgum leg. Maybe even two, as I recall someone wanting to see duplicate spindles turned.

That was me - I am interested in how through turning one can create duplicate items again and again and consistently. Spindles being one such common items, with tool handles being the other one that really interests me.

I am also keen to know how to makes specific shapes in handles and tools.

Like the thin tapering ridge in this image:

Also how to make different types of curved lines both concave and convex. Also how to make round shape like a ball, getting the arc to travel evenly down both sides. Simple stuff I am sure but, that is were I am at.

    That's simple.

Story sticks and practice, just the same as turning out duplicates with any other form of woodwork.

I am getting the hang of using a gouge and the rotating the cutting edge as I go right to left and back again. I am however dangerous with a skew, having given myself a few scares and tacking out chips with it.

I got a chance to play around with spindle shapes in ASFF in Launceston, but like so much at ASFF I got little to no help to actually learn anything. I can make all kinds of shapes but how and why and doing it again after the first time that is something that escapes me at this time.

So, you don't want to see a young face ... like mine.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

That's what I say when they give me two bits of wood and say 'take your handplane and dress them both to X" by Y"' Interesting shapes I can get. Duplicating 'em though... HA! Flat & square is totally beyond me and working even one to accurate final dimension? [snort]

And what am I told? "Practice, practice, practice."

I think we may have a serious problem there... "cake." "Cake."

    That's spelled "C,A,K,E,fullstop"

    Hmmm...

    [ponders]

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't there be an S on the end?
