There is no doubting that Ashley is a good turner with a bright future but unfortunately she has developed some turning bad habits.
Particularly her use of a short section of a skew blank as an unhandled negative rake scraper (1'30" to approx. 2' in the video.), then a similar curved negative rake scraper tool at around the 2'20" mark. She appears to use it as a card scraper to fair the curve. I'm sure Ashley understands the hazard & the risks, so I won't judge her choice, but it only takes one small hidden imperfection in the blank to change her perception of "a relatively safe technique" into a really bad day. Also a bit cringe worthy watching her keep the tool rest so close with the corner of the bevel to face of the scrapers riding on the lip of the tool rest.
To Ashley's credit she does change to a more appropriate long handled Stuart Batty scraper latter in the video.
But then I'm sure if some one videoed me turning that they would find some bad habits too!
btw I have met Ashley at Turnfest and have discussed some matters with her face to face.Mobyturns
