A two year bender.
Nearly two years ago a gum tree that was growing too close to my workshop was removed. I have no idea what type of gum it was (definitely not a local type) however the grain looked interesting enough to rough turn a bowl blank from a bit of it.
The timber seemed very moist, so I painted a bit of p.v.a on the end grain to slow things down a bit.
The blank warped and bent considerably.

I quite liked the rippling that the shrinkage caused and decided to leave a bit of it on the finished item.
Glad the rough turned bowl was left with plenty of meat on it. After turning the outside shape you can see there was not heaps of wall thickness left to play with.

I drilled a hole on a drill press in the centre before turning the inside to mark the maximum depth the inside should be turned to. Usually I would measure from the lip of the bowl to the bottom to determine the thickness but the lip on this bowl made that method a tad tricky.
There was a bit of checking (I think that is what you would call these small holes) going on but considering the movement in the blank that is not a bad result.

So just left the rippling on the lip of the bowl. Filled in the checkmarks with some filler and this is the result after a coat of spray lacquer. Will give it at least one more coat.

Finished bowl dimensions are dia 290mm x 105mm high (at the highest point). Glad I left the rippling on the rim. Thanks for looking.

An interesting effect . I've never seen rippling as good as that . I think it was worth the wait .
